Service: Bal Mela – A Journey of Creativity and Collaboration

Bal Mela is an annual event where students from government schools visit our school to participate in various activities, fostering a spirit of learning and collaboration. This year, I had the opportunity to contribute by teaching macramé art to the visiting students. It was a fulfilling experience that allowed me to share my creativity while developing new skills and working collaboratively with my peers. Through this experience, I not only connected with the students but also reflected on my growth in terms of planning, communication, and teamwork.

LO2: Demonstrating Challenges and Developing New Skills

One of the most significant aspects of this experience was learning macramé art myself before teaching it to others. Initially, I found the intricate knots and patterns challenging, but with practice and determination, I gradually mastered the technique. This process taught me the importance of perseverance and adaptability when faced with new challenges. By the time Bal Mela arrived, I was confident in my ability to create keychains and teach the basics of macramé to the students. This experience highlighted how stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new skills can lead to personal growth and a sense of accomplishment.

LO3: Initiating and Planning a CAS Experience

Planning what to teach during Bal Mela was a crucial part of this experience. I had to consider the age group and skill level of the students and decide on a project that was both simple and engaging. After much thought, I chose to teach them how to make macramé keychains, as it was a manageable yet creative activity. I also prepared materials in advance and created step-by-step instructions to ensure the session ran smoothly. This process taught me the importance of careful planning and organization, as it directly impacted the success of the activity and the students’ enjoyment.

LO5: Demonstrating the Skills and Benefits of Collaboration

Teaching macramé art during Bal Mela was a collaborative effort. I worked closely with my teammates to divide responsibilities, assist the students, and ensure everyone had a positive experience. We communicated effectively, shared ideas, and supported each other throughout the event. This collaboration not only made the session more efficient but also enriched the experience for both the students and us. It reinforced the idea that working together can lead to better outcomes and create a sense of unity and shared purpose.

LO6: Engagement with Issues of Global Significance

Bal Mela is an annual event that invites students from government schools to our school for various activities that inculcate a spirit of learning and teamwork among them. The teaching of macramé art helped address larger issues of educational equity and access to creative learning opportunities on a global scale. Students studying in under-resourced schools sometimes do not get the opportunity to experience these hands-on arts; thus, this helped bridge the gap in small yet positive ways. It made me more conscious of the importance of inclusive education and how creative skills have the ability to empower students, build their confidence, and encourage self-expression across social and economic divides.

Conclusion and Connection to LP: Communicator

Bal Mela was a rewarding experience that allowed me to grow as a learner, planner, and team player. It also highlighted the importance of being a communicator, one of the IB Learner Profile attributes. Whether it was explaining macramé techniques to the students, coordinating with my teammates, or reflecting on the experience, effective communication was key to the success of this activity. This experience reminded me that creativity, collaboration, and clear communication can come together to create meaningful and impactful moments. I look forward to applying these lessons in future CAS experiences and beyond.
