Global Odyssey was an incredible opportunity for my friends and me to apply our business knowledge, entrepreneurial thinking, and sports abilities in a practical, real-world setting. We created and ran a football-based game stall where participants could challenge us to a 1v1 match. The concept was simple: each player paid an entry fee of ?100, and if they beat us, we paid them double the amount. This activity pushed us to blend entertainment with strategy and risk management. It wasn’t just about profits it was a dynamic learning experience across marketing, operations, and sportsmanship.
LO3 – Demonstrate How to Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience
Even though the broader Global Odyssey event was planned by the school, organizing our specific stall required detailed initiative and thoughtful preparation. As a group, we brainstormed different stall ideas before settling on the football challenge. We planned the rules carefully to ensure they were clear and fair, determined our pricing model, and calculated potential losses. We also discussed visual presentation to attract students and decided how to split responsibilities during the event. This experience showed me the importance of planning in any venture without structure, even the best ideas can fail. I learned how to manage risk, prepare for setbacks, and create a well-balanced activity that was both engaging and sustainable.
LO4 – Show Commitment and Perseverance in CAS Experience
Running the stall for the entire duration of the event was a test of both physical endurance and mental commitment. We were constantly switching between roles playing back-to-back football matches, collecting entry fees, managing the queue, and explaining the rules to newcomers. There were times we felt exhausted, especially when we lost a few matches and had to pay out large sums. Despite these setbacks, we stayed motivated and focused on improving. We adjusted our playstyles, supported each other, and kept the energy of the stall high. This persistence helped us push through setbacks and disappointment, proving that determination is essential when working towards a goal.
LO6 – Demonstrate Engagement with Issues of Global Significance
While our stall was a small-scale activity, it mirrored larger global systems in surprising ways. Sports and business are massive global industries that contribute significantly to economies worldwide. Our stall represented a simplified version of this mixing competitive sports with customer interaction, revenue generation, and risk-taking. I began to appreciate how the skills we practiced marketing, teamwork, financial strategy, and sportsmanship are universally relevant in real-world professional contexts. Additionally, the way our stall brought together diverse students and encouraged active participation.
Personal Reflections:
Global Odyssey was more than just a fun school event – it was a powerful learning experience. By creating and managing our own football challenge stall, I developed key skills in planning, communication, teamwork, and adaptability. It also offered me insight into the real-world relevance of business and sports, and how deeply intertwined they are in global systems. The experience taught me to be resourceful, resilient, and ethical in my approach – all valuable lessons that I will carry forward into future projects and challenges.
