Garba Fest : Activity!

Garba Fest was one of the most energetic and vibrant events of the year, where students gathered after school hours to celebrate the spirit of Navratri through dance, music, and tradition. Participating in this fest wasn’t just about fun—it was also a meaningful experience that helped me reflect on my personal strengths, take on new challenges, and work as part of a spirited team.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

As someone who enjoys dancing casually but hasn’t had formal training in Garba, this event was an opportunity to step slightly out of my comfort zone. I realized that my strength lay in picking up rhythms quickly and adapting to group movements. However, I also identified areas for growth—especially in coordinating hand and foot movements in more intricate steps. I now know that with more practice and confidence, I can take on more technically challenging dance forms in the future.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Learning Garba steps was definitely a challenge. 22, 32, 6, 10, all these numbers would confuse me at first! Unlike freestyle dancing, Garba requires synchronization and stamina. I practiced before the event with friends who were more experienced, and gradually improved. The practice helped me understand each number, and I felt a genuine sense of achievement when I was finally able to keep up with the group during the faster segments.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Garba Fest was also a collaborative effort. Whether it was coordinating moves in circles, cheering each other on, or helping someone who was struggling with the steps, the event emphasized the importance of community. It reminded me that learning becomes easier and more enjoyable when shared. The collective energy of everyone dancing in sync was incredibly motivating and made the entire experience feel unified and joyful.

Ultimately, Garba Fest was more than a great cultural experience, it was a chance for actual growth. Not only did I enhance my coordination and endurance by learning the dance, but I also became more attuned to the fact that I love pushing outside of my comfort zone. Learning the steps and maintaining the rapid rhythm was difficult at first, but it helped teach me patience and persistence.

What made the experience even more special was the sense of belonging. Dancing with fellow peers, assisting one another, and enjoying small victories taught me how great collaboration is. I took away from the event stronger bonds, new learnings, and a greater appreciation for the beauty and rigor involved in traditional dance styles such as Garba.
