Introduction
Working in Hearts of Hope, an NGO that works to provide equal access to education, was a highly enriching experience. It gave me the chance to interact positively with children from disadvantaged communities, assisting them in developing basic learning skills as well as building their confidence and love for learning. Through this, I developed as a person, overcoming personal struggles, learning collaborative skills, and enhancing my empathy.
LO1: Recognize own strengths and work on areas for improvement
My strongest area throughout this experience was being able to engage with children, making learning fun and interactive for them. Whether I was utilizing stories to describe mathematical principles or integrating games into language classes, I adapted to make it engaging for them. In addition to this, I also understood that I had to enhance my capacity for accommodating diverse learning needs. There were some children who were more struggling than others, and I had to learn to make adjustments with respect to my instructional strategy. Through this experience, I became more flexible and patient in terms of instruction.
LO2: Evidence that obstacles have been taken on, acquiring new skills along the way
Teaching in a context where there were limited resources and children had varying levels of previous education was a demanding but rewarding experience. I learned to acquire new skills, such as teaching concepts in simpler language and coming up with creative ways to teach without the use of technology or costly materials. This challenged me to get creative about how to make learning available and effective even in trying situations.
One of the biggest challenges was maintaining the children’s interest when they were discouraged by challenging subjects. To get around this, I focused on instilling their confidence by reducing complicated concepts into manageable, incremental steps and praising their successes. Witnessing their enthusiasm when they finally grasped a concept was one of the most rewarding experiences of this project.
LO5: Show the skills and appreciate the advantages of working together
Hearts of Hope operates on teamwork. From coordinating lesson plans with the other volunteers, generating innovative teaching techniques, or planning group activities for the kids, teamwork was key. I learned that effective teamwork involves good communication, listening, and a common purpose.
Perhaps the most memorable moment was when my group and I collectively organized a “Reading Day” function, where we created various reading stations with books, story-telling exercises, and interactive debates. Everyone contributed, from choosing books to coming up with engaging learning activities. The event was a success, and it taught me the value of teamwork in making a difference.
Building the IB Learner Profile Trait: Caring
I discovered the real definition of caring—not only in the general sense, but through regular actions that can make a positive impact. Education is a fundamental right, yet there are so many children who do not have access to proper learning opportunities. This experience taught me to become more compassionate, realizing the struggles of others and actively trying to help them.
It wasn’t merely about teaching; it was about demonstrating kindness, encouragement, and patience. Small things—such as waiting behind after a session to assist a child who was having difficulty with reading or merely listening to their stories—taught me that caring is about effort, presence, and making others feel valued.
Conclusion
Working with Hearts of Hope has been the most rewarding experience of my life. It has taught me new skills, how to collaborate as a team, and more importantly, become a more understanding and patient person. This experience reiterated the concept that education is not merely knowledge; it is empowerment, opportunity, and hope.
