Barista Course – Creativity

As part of my CAS experience in the DP program, I completed a barista course. I had always assumed that making coffee was simple and just required an espresso machine, or just a spoon of coffee powder and a glass of milk. However, after taking the course, I realized how challenging it is to make a perfect cup of coffee from scratch and the skill involved in creating a high-quality cup of coffee. I now understand that being a barista isn’t something that can easily be pursued as a full-time career.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

The barista course was transformative, taking me from someone who viewed coffee as a simple drink to someone who sees it as a craft. It taught me not only technical skills but also the value of patience, practice, and attention to detail. I now understand the joy of creating a cup of coffee that not only tastes great but also tells a story. The journey has inspired me to continue growing, refining my skills, and sharing my passion for coffee with others. Lastly understanding the different types of coffee beans, such as Arabica and Robusta, to learning about their origins and flavour profiles, I began to appreciate the depth and variety coffee offers.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

Watching a skilled barista craft a perfect espresso is mesmerizing, but my first attempt revealed how intricate the process truly is. Without measuring my coffee grounds, my espresso was inconsistent—either too strong or too weak. I also neglected to pre-heat the espresso machine, leading to improper extraction and difficulty replicating good results. These missteps taught me the importance of brew ratios, preparation, and attention to detail. By organizing my workspace and refining each step, I turned mistakes into lessons, improving my skills and gaining a deeper appreciation for the art of espresso making.
