This year’s Bal Mela, held on 8th February, was no different than others in the past in terms of its fun and glory. This event is organised every year where underprivileged students form other schools are invited to FS for whom fun activities are planned.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.
Hundreds of students form various schools come to enjoy the ‘Bal Mela’ set up for them. Volunteers had to be allocated appropriately at each activity station for the smooth progression of the event. However, there were definitely challenges faced since at times 2-3 schools at once came to an activity station, leading to a huge crowd there which only a few volunteers were not able to manage. Through such situations, we definitely developed our skill of being calm under pressure and not show frustration on our faces, which reflected in the event’s success.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
Due to the challenges as mentioned above, it was extremely crucial that all volunteers worked together. Each activity station had different number of volunteers present based on the requirements. I was a volunteer for musical chair. For this, one person had to be incharge of playing the music, others to ensure no student was cheating, and yet others to hand over gifts in the from of stationary to the students who won. In this way, we helped each other carry out our activity successfully.
LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance.
Widespread discrimination and prejudices are observed in the world today, that has been divided into various different cultural groups, castes and religions. Not just adults, but children too face this. Moreover, widespread gap between the rich and the poor has led to a lack of and unequal opportunities for the latter. This event recognises this global issue, and provides opportunities to children from underprivileged schools, opportunities they never get a chance to receive. It establishes a sense of equality among the children, as well as the students volunteering for the event.
