Maths Trivia (Interhouse competition)

Math Trivia is an interhouse mathematics competition for Grade 10 students, which I organized alongside five other team members. The competition featured four houses, each with a team of four participants, competing across multiple rounds with difficult math questions. As organizers, we designed the entire structure of rounds, curated the questions, and hosted the event. Despite facing problems, we successfully executed the event through teamwork and careful planning.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.

Organizing Math Trivia was not as simple as just creating math questions. The biggest challenge we faced was managing time constraints, as we had to structure the event efficiently to fit within the allotted time. Ensuring fairness in scoring, handling tiebreakers, and keeping the competition engaging for all participants also required adequate thinking. Hosting the event in front of an entire grade was another challenge, as it pushed me to improve on my confidence. By taking on these challenges, I developed valuable skills in problem-solving, time management, which will be useful in the future.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.

This CAS experience required us to initiate and plan every aspect of the competition. We had to brainstorm the question formats, decide on the number of rounds, divide responsibilities, and ensure all technical aspects were in place. Creating a well-structured event was crucial, as any mistakes could disrupt the flow of the competition. Through this experience, I learned the importance of organization, time management, and delegation, which are essential skills for any leadership role.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

Collaboration played a vital role in making Math Trivia a success. Our team divided tasks efficiently—some focused on curating and verifying the questions, while others worked on designing the presentation and planning the event structure. During the competition, we had to coordinate in real-time to ensure smooth transitions between rounds and effective time management. Without teamwork, it would have been impossible to conduct such a large-scale event successfully. This experience helped me appreciate the importance of communication and coordination in achieving a common goal.

Organizing Math Trivia was a unique and enriching experience. It pushed me to take on new responsibilities, develop leadership skills, and enhance my ability to work under pressure. Seeing the competition unfold successfully and watching participants engage enthusiastically made all the effort worthwhile and I certainly hope to work in a similar event again.
