The ISSO (International Schools Sports Organization) Basketball Tournament was a national-level competition which this year was held at CHIREC International School, Hyderabad, from September 28 to October 2, 2024. Representing my school, I competed against other IB schools from across India. The tournament tested not just our basketball skills but also our ability to work as a team, adapt to different playstyles, and handle high-pressure situations. This was a really good opportunity for me to get exposure to this level of competitiveness.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.
Participating in ISSO helped me recognize my strengths and weaknesses as a basketball player. One of my strengths was my ability to defend up whenever I was asked to and help provide for the team. However, I also realized that I needed to work on my physical endurance and offensive gameplay to become a more valuable player to the team. Despite not getting as much playtime, I made the most of my experience by learning from my teammates and focusing on my personal growth. This self-awareness will help me improve my game in future tournaments.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
The ISSO tournament was physically and mentally demanding, pushing me to adapt and develop new skills under pressure. One of the biggest challenges was maintaining my performance despite fatigue and injuries, especially with my wrist injury affecting my shooting. I had to adjust my playing style, focusing more on defense and passing rather than taking difficult shots. Additionally, competing against high-level teams required quick decision-making. Through constant feedback from coaches and teammates, I improved my ability to adjust mid-game, enhancing my defensive positioning and on-court awareness.
LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
Perseverance was key throughout the tournament. Our team had to stay committed despite facing strong opponents and setbacks on the court. Even when we lost matches, we had to analyze our mistakes, stay motivated, and come back stronger in the next game. I learned that basketball is not just about individual skill, but about continuous improvement and determination. There were moments of frustration within the team when things did not go as planned, but instead of giving up, it was important to stay focused on staying engaged, supporting the team, and improving the understanding of the game. This experience taught me the importance of staying dedicated to a goal, even when faced with obstacles.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
Basketball is a sport that thrives on teamwork, where every player’s role is essential to the team’s success. Throughout the ISSO tournament, I witnessed how effective communication, coordination, and trust shaped our performance. Whether executing plays on the court or supporting my team from the sidelines by analyzing strategies and keeping morale high, I remained engaged in every aspect of the game. We had to constantly adapt based on our opponents’ strengths and weaknesses, emphasizing selflessness and strategic thinking. This experience reinforced that success comes not just from individual skill but from working together toward a common goal.
The ISSO tournament was an intense yet rewarding experience that pushed me to adapt, persevere, and refine my skills under pressure. Competing against strong teams required quick decision-making, strategic adjustments, and a deep understanding of the game. Whether executing plays on the court or analyzing the match from the sidelines, I remained engaged, constantly looking for ways to contribute. This experience reinforced the importance of resilience and adaptability, showing me that success comes not just from individual skill but from staying focused, learning from each challenge, and making smart decisions in high-stakes situations.
