I had participated in one of my school’s Night Tournament, which was a really fun experience with a lot to learn. I and most of my friends really played one sport which was basketball. It was a really good experience, since I got to learn many other things which only comes with tournament experiences. Even though we won a couple matches and lost a couple matches, all I gained was insight on how the games function and really work. Since I started playing basketball at the start of grade 11, I wanted to learn skill moves, playing and winning isolated 1 v 1’s, furthermore, communication and teamwork is a very key component in basketball since there are 5 player and each team and being in line with each other and communicating with each other is constantly something that has to be done or else we lose points because of such miss coordination being done because of not communicating. I even took a couple or breaks to spend some time watching other sports, which were great in their own ways and which taught me a lot. This cas experience also aligns itself with SDG 3: which is good health and well-being, this is because basketball is such as active and athletic sports, it requires a lot of stamina to keep up with other with other things such as a good physique and jumping capabilities, and hence it also encourages both physical and mental well-being.
LO1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth
Since this was my first time playing in a basketball tournament, I was pretty clueless about how to actually compete. Even though I had been learning the sport for a few months, I still didn’t fully understand the rules or how to play properly in a real match. At first, I wasn’t sure how to position myself, how to move effectively, or even when to take a shot. But as the games went on, I started picking up skills like behind-the-back dribbling, between-the-legs dribbling, and better communication with my teammates. These skills helped me feel more confident and improved my overall performance. I also realized that communication was just as important as individual skill, because working together as a team made scoring much easier. By the end of the tournament, I had developed a much better understanding of how to play, and I was able to contribute more effectively to my team. This experience helped me see both my strengths and weaknesses—while I improved my ball-handling and teamwork, I still have a lot to learn about strategy and decision-making in fast-paced games.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
At the start of the tournament, I barely knew any basketball moves, and I wasn’t sure how to coordinate with my team to score points. I would often get confused about where to move, when to pass, or how to communicate effectively with my teammates. But slowly, I started learning some simple moves that gave me more confidence, like basic dribbling techniques, quick passing, and better positioning. As I improved, I felt more involved in the game, and instead of standing around unsure of what to do, I actively participated. One of the biggest challenges was overcoming my hesitation to take shots—at first, I didn’t want to take risks because I was afraid of missing. But after practicing a few easy layups and short-range shots, I started taking more chances and even scored several points for my team. Learning these small but important skills completely changed how I played the game and made me enjoy it a lot more. By the end of the tournament, I felt much more comfortable on the court and realized that taking on challenges, even when they seem difficult, can lead to great improvement.
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Since this was a school-organized tournament, I didn’t have to plan the event itself, but I did have to prepare for it in my own way. Before the tournament, I realized I needed to plan how I would approach the game, from warming up properly to understanding my role in the team. I started watching short videos on basketball fundamentals and asked my teammates for advice on how to position myself better. During the games, I also planned small adjustments in how I played—for example, I focused on passing more when I wasn’t confident in my shooting. I also made sure to pace myself so I wouldn’t get exhausted too quickly. This experience taught me that even for something as simple as playing in a tournament, planning ahead makes a huge difference. By taking the time to prepare and adjust my approach, I was able to play better, stay focused, and contribute to my team more effectively.
LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Even though I was struggling at first, I kept pushing myself to improve my game and stay engaged throughout the tournament. It would have been easy to get discouraged after missing shots or not knowing what to do, but I made sure to keep trying. Even when my team was losing, I stayed motivated and focused on what I could do to help. Over time, I noticed that my efforts were paying off—I was moving better on the court, making better passes, and even scoring some points. My teammates also encouraged me to keep going, which helped me stay positive and not give up. This tournament really showed me the value of perseverance; no matter how difficult something seems at first, if you keep practicing and learning, you will get better. Even though I still have a lot to improve, I’m proud that I stuck with it and didn’t give up.
LO5: Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively
Basketball is a team sport, so teamwork was one of the most important parts of this tournament. At first, I wasn’t sure how to communicate with my teammates properly. Sometimes, I would move in the wrong direction or pass the ball at the wrong time, which made things confusing. But as the games went on, I started understanding my teammates’ playing styles and learned how to pass more effectively and call for the ball when I was open. I realized that good communication and trust make a huge difference in how well a team plays. When we started working together better, we made fewer mistakes and played much more smoothly. This experience taught me that in any team situation, listening, adapting, and supporting each other are key to success.
LO6: Demonstrate Engagement with Issues of Global Significance
Playing in this tournament reminded me of how important sports and physical activity are for people’s health and well-being, which connects to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. All around the world, sports help people stay physically active, reduce stress, and build strong communities. I realized that basketball, like other sports, isn’t just about competition—it’s also a way to stay healthy and connect with others. Many organizations worldwide use sports to help young people stay active and engaged, especially in communities where people might not have access to proper sports facilities. This tournament made me appreciate how playing sports is not just fun but also an important part of living a healthy lifestyle.
LO7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions
Throughout the tournament, I made sure to play fairly and respect the game. Even when I saw other players making mistakes, I didn’t take advantage of the situation unfairly. If I accidentally committed a foul, I admitted it and made sure to respect the referee’s decisions. There were moments where it was tempting to bend the rules to gain an advantage, but I realized that playing with honesty and integrity is more important than just winning. Good sportsmanship creates a better experience for everyone, and I saw how respecting the rules made the game more enjoyable. This tournament showed me that doing the right thing, even in small moments, helps build trust and makes competition more meaningful.
Conclusion
This basketball tournament was more than just playing a game—it was about learning, teamwork, and growth. I improved my skills, learned how to work better with a team, and stayed committed even when things were tough. I also saw how sports connect people and promote health and well-being on a global level. Most importantly, I understood the importance of fair play and integrity, which made the tournament a great experience for everyone. This experience has made me more confident in my abilities, and I’m excited to continue improving my skills in basketball and teamwork in the future.
