Community service is an event at Fountainhead School every year. I had the opportunity to volunteer in a community service project which was focused on teaching art and crafts to students from underprivileged backgrounds. My role was teaching arts and crafts, wherein I tried to inspire creativity and self-expression among the children. This experience allowed me to share my passion and interest for creativity while also helping me grow personally. Throughout the program, I had the chance to engage directly with kids in community service that helped me connect with them on a deeper level. The tasks included hands-on activities, providing a well-rounded perspective on how community service functions and its significance. I gained a greater appreciation for the importance of art in empowering individuals and strengthening communities.
Learning Outcome 1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth
During my time volunteering in a community service project , I was able to reflect on my own strengths and areas for growth. I found out that I was strong in creativity as I could innovate different techniques to teach them in a easy way , but I also realised that I needed to improve my patience and adaptability. Working with students who had varying levels of confidence and experience in art challenged me to adjust my teaching style. I had to be flexible with my lesson plans to suit their needs, and this helped me grow .
Learning Outcome 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.
Teaching students was a big challenge since I have never in my life taught anyone especially so many students at a same time. So when it was time for me to teach those students, I faced some difficulty in communicating with them .However, as the days went by, I was able to improve upon my communication skill and thinking skill.I improved my communication skill and got to know how to communicate fluently without facing any issue.
LOI 4: Show Commitment to and Perseverance in CAS Experiences
Throughout my time volunteering, I demonstrated commitment and determination by ensuring the workshops ran smoothly despite challenges. When things didn’t go as planned, I stayed focused on the goal of empowering the students through art. Whether it was adjusting lesson plans or finding ways to engage students, I remained dedicated to providing a positive experience. Even when the workload became overwhelming, I kept pushing forward, understanding the importance of giving students the opportunity to express themselves. This experience taught me that commitment means staying focused and motivated, even through difficulties.
Learning Outcome 6: Engagement with Issues of Global Importance
Art is such a powerful tool for expression, especially for marginalized communities. Through this project, I became more aware of social inequality and the lack of access to resources. I realized that teaching art wasn’t just about teaching skills—it was about giving students a voice and helping them gain the confidence to share their stories. This experience made me understand how art can play a role in creating social change. Additionally , I remember from the event that one day a young kid came to me asking if she could take the scale with her because she wanted to finish the craft that was unfinished in school. This made me feel privilaged and grateful for what I have recieved .
This community service project was a transformative experience for me . It broaden my understanding of how art can influence education and social justice. I saw how creativity can spark personal growth and build stronger communities. I’m grateful for the chance to share my passion with these students and, in turn, learn from them. Moving forward, I hope to continue using art as a way to connect with others and empower people through creative expression.
Lo7 – During this community service project, I was more attuned to the ethical obligation associated with teaching and working with children who have deprived backgrounds. I knew that I had to treat all the students with the same respect and be mindful of my actions so that they instill inclusiveness and encouragement in them. I tried my best to foster a safe and uplifting environment where students felt empowered and encouraged. This exposure taught me that even the smallest decisions—such as the way we talk to, encourage, and react to students—can leave a lasting emotional effect. It reaffirmed my values of empathy, honesty, and responsibility as a volunteer.
This CAS project has boost upon my commitment to community service and highlighted the importance of creativity in addressing social issues. I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned in future projects and continue to grow as a member of my community.
