Padamdungri, a place located in the Dang district of Gujarat is an eco-tourism campsite which I visited with my classmates for our rural immersion trip. The trip allowed me to experience the lifestyle of rural areas, specifically of people living in Padamdungri since the campsite was totally surrounded by nature, with natural cold water coming for shower, and food made by locals for us using natural food grown on trees. The journey allowed me to be creative, serve others, and perform adventurous activities, expanding my abilities. This journey was different, something which really impacted me deeply as it gave me a chance to explore myself by living the rural lifestyle and embracing their culture.
Learning Outcome 1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.
The environment was new to me, I had never been to a place totally immersed in nature like Padamdungri was. The feeling felt after reaching the place was great, something unexplainable. As the first day passed, and the second day started, I was observing that it was hard for my peers to adjust in the place because of mosquitoes, only cold water available and small rooms. Even though I was also disturbed a little at first, I found myself being able to adjust well very soon, sooner than my peers which I think is my strength. I was able to adapt well to the environment quickly. Furthermore, activities which required hard work like farming and hill climbing when the sun is at its peak is also what I think I adapted very well which is my strength, however, while embracing hard work and such activities, I also thought of exceeding my limits every time, no matter how good I already am through which I developed areas for personal growth while embracing my strengths.
Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
Even though adaptability was my strength during the journey, initially I did face challenges to adjust because of the new environment. I faced challenges adjusting to the new lifestyle and to the new food type, however, I embraced the situation and adapted to the situation quickly later on, after which I had no problem adjusting to changes during the journey. Moreover, at our trek to Toraniyo Dungar we had two activities to do, one being rock climbing and the other one being rappelling. As we reached a certain peak at the trek, we had to do rappel down a few meters and then climb back up using rocks (rock climbing). Rappelling is where I faced challenges, in the first try, I failed and I was not able to go down properly with proper posture. I even failed the second time. I did not give up and the third time, with better focus and posture, I successfully completed the activity and then rock climbing was easy for me. I developed better rappelling skills.
Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
Talking about initiating and planning a CAS experience, I did not plan and initiate anything as everything was managed by school except deciding room members. The itinerary for the trip was given to us on 27th of November 2024 and we had to go at 16th December, so I had enough time to prepare for this trip for which I bought clothes, specially a sweater and a jacket. I packed my luggage two days before the trip and my hand bag one day before the trip, in which I kept essential things needed like school – ID card, water bottle, napkins, cap and more.
Learning Outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
I struggled rappelling at first during our trek to Toraniyo Dungar, however, with commitment and perseverance, after 2 failed attempts, I completed the activity successfully. Two creative activities we did was bamboo craft and wall painting for the school we visited there. Bamboo craft was hard, I did not understand it initially. I showed commitment and instead of letting go, I asked my peers and teachers the questions I had and learned about bamboo craft. While performing bamboo craft where we had to write our names on bamboo, I was struggling in the same and had to take many attempts, showing commitment and perseverance used to complete the task which enhanced my creative skills and creative knowledge. Furthermore, wall painting was also hard, it was something where one mistake would have ruined the entire art because we were live painting on the wall where warli art was already drawn. I needed to paint a lot of things on the wall with focus, precision and patience which I was truly tired to continue, however, with the motivation to do something for the school, to make the school look good with the art, I continued doing what I was supposed to do, showing commitment and perseverance.
Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
We visited Ambika Hardar farm, a turmeric farm where we had to farm the food as well. We were divided into two groups and in groups we started farming. Farming was a very tiring activity, in one activity, we had to dig out a lot to find turmeric crops, while in the other we had to surround plants by placing a lot of soil around it. Each of us in our team extended our limits to complete the task, we all gave our best and that is what results in the accomplishment of the task. There was a moment when I was very tired, such that I didn’t wanted to work anymore and just sleep, however, I looked around and saw all my peers working just as hard as me, this motivated me to not give up and continue working harder. We all as a team worked hard and used each other’s help to complete the task. This shows how even when the task was tiresome and even though it was hard, by working collaboratively, we were able to do the task. This activity improved and helped me demonstrate my collaboration skills
Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
In rural areas like Padamdungri, it is observed that the schools are not as developed as they are in cities which is because of the difference in development in rural areas and in urban areas. Less developed schools in rural areas limits the ability of students studying there, affecting their lives. We as a class engaged with this globally significant issue by visiting a school, dividing ourselves in a group of 3-4 and teaching what we know to the students about any subject. We had conversations with the students, taught them what we know, and understood how their school worked. Moreover, we also played sports like Kabaddi and Kho-Kho with the students so that everyone is engaged and so that we all could connect better. Additionally, one more global significant issue is rise of use of demerit goods like tobacco, alcoholic beverages, and very sugary food/drinks between students, so to address this issue to the students of the school we visited, we conducted a play, a drama where the main character suffers at the end because of consumption of demerit goods, addressing how they are bad for students.
Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
During the journey, I was always conscious, knowing that I have to respect the traditions, beliefs and the overall culture of the people of Padamdungri. When talking about ethics, it is not right to mock, reject or ignore traditions, beliefs and culture if it is being presented to you, what one should do at the time is listen and accept the culture for the perspective of those who belong to that culture and that is exactly what I did, and while doing this, I actually understood their culture and enjoyed experiencing the same a lot. Local musical instrument and dance was planned for us where musical artists from the culture would come and present their art skills of music and dance. I initially was not interested, but at the same time, also recognizing and considering the ethics of choices and actions, decided to at least listen and accept the culture for what it is, and after I did that, while paying attention to the music and the dance, I started enjoying it and I got interested in the same which is something I did not expected before.
Conclusion –
To conclude, this trip has not been just a normal trip, it has been an entire experience, a real and proper rural immersion which improved me as a person. It made me gain new knowledge and new experiences, while also improving skills such as collaboration skills, patience level, focus, reflective skills and more. Not only did I had fun with friends, but I also learned a lot in this trip. The trip gave me a chance to be creative, it gave me a chance to take part in adventurous activities, and it gave me a chance to serve others, which all in the end, elevated me as a person.
