CAS Reflection: Table Tennis Journey

I took up Table Tennis (TT) as a HDP sport to learn it throughout a one year course, I wanted to learn it because understanding how the sport would help me in achieving quick reflex actions, strategic thinking, and precision. table tennis is played on a table with paddles and a ping pong ball, It would also improve focuses on hand eye coordination, agility, and mental focus. It is usually and most commonly played as a individual sport, though doubles matches also take place to have an improved teamwork and collaboration skills. over the past 9 months while I was learning it, engaging in table tennis as a part of myt CAS activity it has helped me to develop technical skills and communication skills. This journey has strengthended my self discipline and team work aligning with key CAS learning outcomes and shaping me into a more adaptable and committed individual.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

Over the past 9 months, I have engaged in table tennis as part of my Activity component in CAS. This journey has helped me recognize my strengths and areas that needed improvement, allowing me to develop both physically and mentally. At the beginning, I noticed that I had good hand-eye coordination and quick reflexes, which gave me an advantage in fast-paced rallies. I also had a strong forehand, which became one of my key strengths. However, as I played against more skilled opponents, I realized that my backhand shots and footwork were areas that needed significant improvement. To develop these weaknesses, I took a structured approach watching tutorials, practicing drills, and seeking feedback from experienced players. Over time, I saw a noticeable improvement in my backhand, making my overall gameplay more balanced. Additionally, I worked on my strategic thinking, learning how to anticipate my opponent’s moves rather than just reacting to them. Beyond technical skills, table tennis also helped me grow in mental resilience. There were moments of frustration when I lost matches despite putting in effort, but I learned to view setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than failures. This shift in mindset has helped me in other areas of my academic and personal life as well.

Learning Outcome 4: Show Commitment to and Perseverance in CAS Experiences

Staying committed to table tennis for almost an entire year required perseverance. There were times when I struggled with maintaining consistency due to academic workload and other commitments. However, I made sure to prioritize regular practice and push through challenges, even when progress felt slow. One of the biggest tests of my perseverance was when I faced a plateau in improvement. There were weeks where my performance did not seem to improve despite my efforts. Instead of giving up, I reassessed my training methods, sought guidance from my coach, and set small, achievable goals to stay motivated. This experience taught me the value of persistence and discipline, qualities that are essential not just in sports but in all aspects of life.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively

While table tennis is often seen as an individual sport, I quickly realized the importance of collaboration in improving my skills. Training with teammates allowed me to learn from their strengths, receive constructive feedback, and develop strategies that I wouldn’t have thought of alone. One of the most valuable aspects of working with others was doubles matches, where communication and teamwork were essential. I had to coordinate movements, understand my partner’s playing style, and develop strategies together. This experience enhanced my collaborative skills, teaching me the importance of trust, adaptability, and mutual support. Additionally, I contributed to a supportive team environment by encouraging others, sharing tips, and organizing friendly matches to help everyone improve. Through these experiences, I recognized how collaboration accelerates learning and makes the process more enjoyable.

This 9 month journey in table tennis has been a transformative experience. It has allowed me to identify my strengths, work on my weaknesses, stay committed despite challenges, and grow through teamwork. The skills I have developed—self-discipline, perseverance, and collaboration—will benefit me far beyond the sport, shaping me into a more resilient and adaptable individual.
