The Bal Mela was a miraculous initiative which bought creativity and happiness to young children from underprivileged backgrounds. The event was designed in such a manner that the students could have loads of fun and they can also actively participate in activities including both arts and sports. The major focus was to create an environment where learning meets joy and to inspire the young minds through playful meaningful experiences. However, not all children can obtain quality learning experiences or the resources to really explore their creativity. The Bal Mela Project aims to bring together underprivileged children for a day of learning, discovery, and fun.
LO 1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.
Being enthusiastic about education and volunteer work, I was thrilled to be a part of an event that would help impoverished kids learn and have fun. However, I soon realised that working in such a setting required patience, flexibility, and effective communication skills in addition to enthusiasm. As a part of the core team, we were expected to make the activities and decide volunteers required for each activity. Apart from that, we also had to send out an email to the other students for noticing them about this event and I was able to use my leadership skills and communication skills while conveying the message to the volunteers. We also had a session with the volunteers to make them understand the entire process wherein I was able to again use my effective communication skills to ensure that the event goes successful. Even though I was not supposed to help out with the activities on the D-Day, I really wanted to help the kids and I joined the volunteers for face and tattoo painting. Although, the rush for this activity was a lot as everyone wanted to get their personalised tattoos and managing a large group of energetic children was challenging but I was able to improve my management skills and cater to each and every enthusiastic kid.
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
There were a few hindrances and challenges that came along with this experience but I was able to tackle them and develop new skills through the entire process. Engaging with kids who had never taken part in such an event before was one of the most difficult tasks. A large number of them were timid, apprehensive, or unaccustomed to organised events such as art classes. At first, I had trouble involving them because some of them were hesitant to try new things. But by speaking positively, modelling the activities, and fostering an enjoyable, stress-free atmosphere, I was able to progressively win their confidence and excitement. I learnt the value of patience and positive reinforcement when working with young children from this experience, which also improved my leadership and communication abilities. Managing time was another difficulty. Making sure every child had an equal opportunity to participate was crucial because there were several activities going on at once. Occasionally, too many people participated in some activities, which caused confusion and lengthy wait times. We swiftly changed the schedule to address this, splitting the kids up into smaller groups and allocating volunteers to various activity stations. I learnt from this how crucial it is to be adaptable, collaborate with others, and make decisions quickly when organising an event.
LO 3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience
Organizing the Bal Mela Project required careful planning, teamwork, and initiative to ensure that the event ran smoothly and provided a meaningful experience for the children. From the initial brainstorming sessions to the final execution, every aspect of the event demanded thoughtful preparation and coordination. The planning process began with identifying the key objectives of the event—we wanted to create a space where children from underprivileged backgrounds could engage in interactive learning, creative expression, and fun activities that they might not have access to in their daily lives. Once we had a clear vision, we divided responsibilities among different teams, including activity coordination, logistics, and volunteer management.
LO 4: Show Commitment to and Perseverance in CAS Experiences
Organizing an event for children from underprivileged backgrounds was not a simple task—it demanded dedication, patience, and a willingness to overcome challenges. Despite the difficulties we faced, staying committed to our goal made the event a memorable and impactful experience for both the children and volunteers. Through this experience, I realized that commitment and perseverance are key to making a meaningful impact. There were moments when I felt exhausted, but seeing the smiles on the children’s faces, their enthusiasm for learning, and their excitement for every activity made all the effort worthwhile. The Bal Mela Project reaffirmed my belief that true service is not just about good intentions—it’s about staying dedicated, working hard, and never giving up, even when faced with challenges.
LO 5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
From planning and organizing to executing the event, every aspect required effective teamwork, communication, and cooperation. Working with my peers, teachers, and volunteers taught me the value of shared responsibilities and collective problem-solving, proving that when people work together, they can create something truly impactful. On the day of the event, teamwork became even more crucial. With so many children participating, coordinating activities, ensuring smooth transitions between stations, and keeping the energy levels high required constant cooperation. At times, when certain areas became overcrowded or children needed extra guidance, volunteers stepped in to support one another without hesitation. This showed me how collaboration leads to adaptability, allowing us to handle challenges more effectively.
LO 6: Engagement with issues of global significance.
Around the world, millions of children lack access to quality education, creative learning opportunities, and extracurricular activities, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. Through this initiative, we aimed to bridge that gap, even if just for a day, by providing a space where children could explore, learn, and express themselves freely. This experience also highlighted how community-driven initiatives can help address educational inequality. While the Bal Mela was a small-scale event, it showed me that even small efforts—like organizing engaging learning experiences, donating educational materials, or volunteering time—can have a meaningful impact. It has inspired me to think about long-term, sustainable ways to support children’s education beyond one-time events.
LO 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
One of the main ethical points we had to consider was making sure our approach was respectful and not condescending. We really needed to avoid treating the children in a way that might make them feel uncomfortable or less fortunate. Our goal was to create an environment where they felt welcomed, valued, and equal. This involved interacting with them as equals, encouraging their participation without pressure, and making sure they had a say in their own experiences instead of making decisions on their behalf.

Overall, the project taught me valuable lessons in responsibility, teamwork, adaptability, and ethical service. We learned that true impact is not just about providing temporary happiness but about creating opportunities for lasting change. It also reinforced the idea that small acts of kindness and service can contribute to a much larger movement for equality and social justice. For the children, this event was an opportunity to express themselves, build confidence, and experience the joy of learning in a supportive environment. Many of them had never had the chance to participate in creative workshops, interactive storytelling, or scientific experiments before. Watching them immerse themselves in activities, collaborate with their peers, and proudly showcase their creations was one of the most fulfilling aspects of the experience.
