Bal Mela, a vibrant fair for children from underprivileged schools in our neighborhood, provided an opportunity to share my passion for basketball. My role was to teach basic basketball shooting skills to the children, aiming to inspire them and foster a love for the sport. My goals were to engage the children in a fun and educational way, develop their motor skills, and promote teamwork and sportsmanship.
Learning Outcomes Achieved
LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Teaching basketball at Bal Mela allowed me to identify my strengths in communication and leadership. I recognized that I needed to improve my patience and adaptability when working with young children. This experience helped me develop these areas, making me a more effective teacher and mentor. Understanding our strengths and weaknesses allows us to improve and become more well-rounded individuals.
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
One of the challenges I faced was keeping the children engaged and focused during the sessions. I had to develop new strategies to make the learning process fun and interactive. This experience taught me the importance of creativity and adaptability in teaching. I discovered that using games and positive reinforcement was effective in maintaining the children’s interest. This new skill will be invaluable in future teaching or mentoring roles. Learning new skills is crucial for personal growth and adaptability.
LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Working with other volunteers at Bal Mela was a collaborative effort. Together, we organized a competition where the children were split into three teams. The team that made the most baskets won the competition. This required coordination and communication to ensure the event ran smoothly and that all children had an equal opportunity to participate. This experience highlighted the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving common goals. Collaboration is important because it allows us to learn from others, share ideas, and achieve more together than we could alone.
LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Bal Mela addressed the issue of providing educational and recreational opportunities for underprivileged children. Engaging with this issue made me more aware of the importance of access to quality education and extracurricular activities for all children. This experience reinforced my commitment to promoting equity and inclusivity in education. Understanding global issues contributes to personal growth and encourages us to take action.
Final Takeaways
Through Bal Mela, I developed communication, principled, and reflective learner profile characteristics. This experience linked with my passion for basketball and my interest in teaching and mentoring young children. My participation in the event fostered community engagement and a sense of responsibility towards promoting equity in education. The highlight was seeing the children’s enthusiasm and progress in learning basketball skills. This activity encouraged creative and critical thinking, promoting principled behavior and intellectual risk-taking. I plan to apply these learnings to future service activities and continue advocating for equal opportunities in education.
