Engaging in service activities allows us to contribute positively to our community while fostering personal growth. As part of my CAS service experience, I visited Shilpi School, a school dedicated to educating and supporting children with disabilities. During my time there, I interacted with the children through various engaging activities designed to stimulate their cognitive and creative abilities. The session included playing brain games to enhance their problem-solving skills and organizing a coloring activity where they filled in a drawing we created for them. Through these activities, I aimed to create an environment of joy, inclusivity, and learning while also developing my own understanding of service and empathy.
Learning Outcomes (LOs)
- LO 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth: During my time at Shilpi School, I realized my ability to engage and communicate effectively with children with disabilities. However, I also recognized the need to improve my patience and adaptability to better cater to their unique needs. This experience encouraged me to work on being more understanding and flexible in unfamiliar environments.
- LO 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process: Initially, I found it challenging to connect with some of the children due to differences in communication styles. However, by observing their behavior and learning from the teachers, I adapted my approach, using more visual and interactive methods to engage them. This helped me develop better interpersonal and leadership skills.
- LO 3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience: Before visiting Shilpi School, my peers and I planned our activities carefully, ensuring they were both fun and beneficial for the children. We structured the session by dividing time between brain games and the coloring activity, ensuring a balance between learning and enjoyment. This planning process helped me understand the importance of organization and preparation in service activities.
- LO 5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively: Working with my peers during the session was essential to creating a positive experience for the children. We divided tasks efficiently, with some of us facilitating games while others assisted the children in coloring. This collaborative effort made our activities smoother and more effective, reinforcing the value of teamwork in service projects.
- LO 6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance: The experience at Shilpi School made me more aware of the challenges faced by children with disabilities and the importance of inclusive education. It reinforced my belief that everyone deserves equal opportunities to learn and grow, and it inspired me to support similar initiatives in the future.
Conclusion
My visit to Shilpi School was an enriching experience that broadened my perspective on inclusivity and service. Through interactive activities, I was able to connect with the children and contribute to their learning in a meaningful way. At the same time, I developed essential skills such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability. This experience strengthened my commitment to community service and encouraged me to seek more opportunities to make a positive impact. Moving forward, I hope to continue supporting and advocating for inclusive education, ensuring that every child, regardless of their abilities, has access to engaging and empowering learning experiences.
