This year, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of a community service, which is an annual school event and initiative where my team and I taught dance to children from underprivileged schools. It was a heartwarming experience that not only tested our leadership and collaboration skills but also reinforced the power of the arts in bringing people together. Finally we put up a performance in front of the entire school which was not only a pride moment for the kids but also for us.
LO3 – how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
This project was planned excitingly and challengingly. Dance lessons were supposed to be so structured as to relate well to children coming from different age groups and social backgrounds. Hence, selection of a fun yet manageable choreography for every child. Additionally, we had to coordinate schedules, divide teaching responsibilities, and create a system to monitor progress. Effective planning played a key role in making the experience enjoyable for everyone.
LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
Teaching dance to approximately 80 children was no easy feat. Keeping them engaged and ensuring they remembered the choreography required immense patience and dedication. There were moments of frustration when they lost interest or struggled with the steps, but we remained persistent. Through repetition, encouragement, and positive reinforcement, we managed to sustain their enthusiasm till the final performance. Our commitment paid off when we saw their excitement and confidence on stage.
LO5 – The skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
This project heavily relied on teamwork. As a group, we divided tasks, supported each other, and found creative ways to manage the large number of children. We had to be adaptable, often stepping in for one another when needed. Effective communication and coordination ensured that the sessions were structured and productive. The experience reinforced the importance of collaboration in overcoming challenges. As when there was one communication gap it would lead to a big mess therefore communicating effectively made us more efficient in the entire event from start to end.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
This experience made me more aware of the socio-economic disparities in education and extracurricular opportunities. Many of these children had never had the chance to participate in structured dance lessons before. By engaging with them, we provided an opportunity for creative expression that they might not have otherwise had. It was fulfilling to know that, even in a small way, we contributed to making the arts accessible to them.
Conclusion
Despite the challenges, this experience was truly rewarding. The sight of the children on stage performing joyfully and confidently was a tribute to their hard work and our effort together. We had shared so much more than just teaching dance; we made bonds, laughed together, and created lasting memories. It is my hope that they learned as much as I learned. This project strengthened my faith in the restorative power of art and the importance of giving back to the community. I look forward to more opportunities where I can use my skills to make a difference.
