Community Service ( Dance )

Service strand

Community service has always been about giving back, but little did I know it would also give me something in return, joy, memories, and a newfound appreciation for the small things in life. From August to September, I participated in community service program that required us to attend six sessions on both Saturdays and Sundays. Normally, my weekends would be spent sleeping in, but this experience completely changed my routine and perspective.

The program was held for children from government schools, providing them with opportunities they might not have had otherwise. There were multiple activities, including arts, sports, and academics, and students were divided accordingly. I was part of the dance team, where we taught less advantaged children different dance routines. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn were truly heartwarming. Every session, they arrived with the brightest smiles, ready to practice and enjoy the process. Their cooperation and excitement made every early morning wake-up worth it.

One of the best parts of this journey was learning their names and forming personal connections with each student. It felt amazing when they recognized me and greeted me with excitement. They even brought us small treats as a token of appreciation, which was the sweetest thing ever. It was fulfilling to know that we were helping them experience something they might not have been able to access on their own.

Teaching dance to these 60+ kids wasn’t just about movements and rhythm,it was about giving them a space to express themselves freely. Watching them perform with so much energy and happiness made me realize the impact of such initiatives. The sessions not only helped them but also helped me grow as a person. It reinforced the idea that community service isn’t just about fulfilling CAS requirements but about making a real difference, no matter how small.

Learning Outcome 1: Identifying Own Strengths and Areas for Growth Through this experience, I recognized my ability to communicate and engage with children effectively. I also realized that patience is key when teaching, as every student learns at their own pace. This made me reflect on how I can further improve my teaching skills and adapt my approach to different learning styles.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrating Challenges and Developing New Skills Waking up early on weekends was a challenge, but over time, I adapted to this new routine. Additionally, teaching dance to students with no prior experience required me to develop new instructional techniques and simplify steps to make them more accessible. Overcoming these challenges helped me develop better leadership and problem-solving skills.

Learning Outcome 3: Initiating and Planning Activities Each session required careful planning, from selecting songs to choreographing steps that the children could easily follow. We had to ensure that the routines were engaging and fun while also being easy to learn. This experience taught me the importance of organization and pre-planning when leading a group activity.

Learning Outcome 4: Showing Perseverance and Commitment Attending all six sessions consistently showed my dedication to the program. Even on days when I felt exhausted, I pushed myself to be present and give my best effort because I knew the kids were counting on us. Seeing their progress made all the effort worthwhile.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrating Collaborative Skills Working with my peers and the children required teamwork and cooperation. We divided responsibilities, supported each other, and ensured a positive learning environment. The collaboration between volunteers and students created a space where everyone felt included and motivated.

Learning Outcome 6: Engagement with Global Issues This experience allowed me to engage with the global issue of inequality in education and access to extracurricular activities. Many of these children do not have the privilege to participate in dance, arts, or sports due to financial constraints. Through this initiative, we contributed to bridging this gap and providing them with an opportunity they might not have otherwise received. It was eye-opening to witness how a little effort on our part could bring so much joy and make a difference in their lives.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognizing Ethical Considerations While teaching dance, I became more aware of the ethical responsibility we had toward these children. It was crucial to treat them with respect, patience, and kindness, ensuring they felt valued and included. We had to be mindful of their backgrounds and create a safe, encouraging environment where they could express themselves without fear. This experience reinforced the importance of ethical conduct in community service and reminded me of the responsibility we have when working with less advantaged communities.

This experience will always hold a special place in my heart, reminding me that sometimes, the simplest acts, like teaching dance, can bring the greatest joy to others and to myself.
