I have been passionate about mathematics since I was in grade two and now in grade 11 when I have this wonderful opportunity to organize a Mathematics trivia then I could not miss it. This early interest in math has feuled my enthusiasm over the years, inspiring me to participate in various math-related competitions. Having taken part in the Math Trivia in both Grade 9 and 10, where my team secured third place, I decided to take this passion to the next level by organizing a Math Trivia event for the Grade 10 students. This project not only allowed me to use my skills in mathematics but also helped me grow in other areas, such as leadership, planning, perseverance, and teamwork.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills:
Organizing a Math Trivia was a challenge I eagerly embraced. While I had experience as a participant in previous trivia events, I had never taken on the role of an organizer. This new responsibility required me to step out of my comfort zone and develop several new skills. From creating the trivia questions to coordinating the event logistics, I was forced to learn how to manage time effectively, organize resources, and handle unexpected issues. One of the biggest challenges I faced was ensuring the questions were both engaging and appropriately challenging for the Grade 10 students, which required me to use my own math knowledge while researching and creating diverse, thought-provoking problems. Through this process, I developed my communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and organizational talents.
LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience:
The journey of initiating and planning the Math Trivia was both exciting and challenging. The first step involved brainstorming and researching ideas for the event, considering factors such as the number of participants, types of questions, and the logistics of the event. I also needed to ensure the event was engaging and educational. I planned the structure of the trivia, decided on the categories (such as algebra, geometry, and number theory), and created the rules and format for the competition. This planning phase required a lot of careful thought and organization. I also needed to secure permission and resources, such as access to classrooms or the auditorium, and recruit volunteers to assist during the event. The planning process was essential to ensure everything ran smoothly and that the event would be memorable for the participants.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience:
While the planning phase was important, the real test of perseverance and commitment came during the execution of the event. From managing last-minute changes to dealing with technical issues, there were several challenges that required me to stay calm and focused. At one point, we had to adjust the question formats because of time constraints. Despite the setbacks, I remained committed to delivering a successful event and made sure all the students had a fun and educational experience. I spent many hours working on the event, from rehearsing the trivia questions to ensuring the smooth running of the day. This experience taught me that perseverance is not just about pushing through difficulties, but also about adapting to challenges and ensuring that the end goal is achieved despite the obstacles.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively:
One of the most rewarding aspects of organizing the Math Trivia was working collaboratively with my peers. Each member of our group took charge of different aspects of the trivia, from preparing the materials and creating the questions to managing the event logistics and overseeing the flow of the trivia itself. We all communicated regularly to ensure that our efforts were aligned and that no task was overlooked. Working together as equals taught me the value of collective leadership—when everyone contributes their ideas and takes responsibility, the team becomes stronger and more effective. This experience emphasized the importance of collaboration, as we were able to leverage each person’s unique strengths and talents to make the event successful.
