Math Trivia – Organizing an Interhouse Competition

Math Trivia is an interhouse mathematics competition for Grade 10 students. As Grade 11 students, my team and I took on the responsibility of organizing the entire event. A team of six of us planned and executed the competition, which consisted of 4 to 5 rounds with 8 to 10 questions in each. From designing the presentation to hosting the event for the entire grade, everything was managed by us. This experience was both challenging and rewarding, as it required careful planning, teamwork, and dedication.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.

This experience strongly connects with the second learning outcome (LO2), as it involved taking on challenges and developing new skills. Organizing an event of this scale was something I had never done before, and it required a lot of preparation. From structuring the rounds to making sure the questions were both engaging and challenging, every step was a learning experience. Hosting the event in front of an entire grade also pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me improve my confidence and public speaking skills.

LO3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience.

The third learning outcome (LO3) is also reflected in this activity, as it required us to initiate and plan a CAS experience. Unlike simply participating in an event, this time, we were responsible for creating it from scratch. We had to brainstorm question formats, divide responsibilities, prepare the presentations, and ensure that the competition ran smoothly. Planning every detail in advance was crucial, and this experience taught me the importance of organization and time management.

LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience.

The fourth learning outcome (LO4) was demonstrated through perseverance and commitment. Organizing Math Trivia was not a one day task, it required multiple days of preparation and coordination. Ensuring that everything was ready on time, from finalizing questions to practicing how we would conduct the event, took dedication. Even when things got difficult, we stayed committed to making the event a success.

LO5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.

The fifth learning outcome (LO5) was a key part of this experience, as collaboration played a huge role in organizing the event. Our team of six had to work together effectively, assigning tasks and helping each other when needed. Some of us worked on creating the presentation, while others focused on curating the questions and structuring the rounds. On the event day, we coordinated as hosts to make sure everything ran smoothly. Without teamwork, it would have been impossible to conduct such a large-scale competition successfully.

Organizing Math Trivia was a unique and valuable experience. It challenged me to plan, communicate, and work under pressure, while also giving me the opportunity to develop leadership and teamwork skills. Seeing the competition unfold successfully and watching the Grade 10 students enjoy it made all the hard work worth it. This experience reinforced the importance of planning, commitment, and collaboration, and I look forward to taking on similar challenges in the future.
