Play2BeatCancer- CAS Project

Over the past four months, I embarked on a journey that not only challenged me but also allowed me to grow as an individual while contributing to a cause close to my heart. With the support of my friends and parents, I planned and organized a pickleball tournament with the aim of making a positive impact on society. This initiative was the first step toward realizing my vision of creating an organization that combines my passion for sports with a commitment to social responsibility. Through this organization, I plan to host various sports tournaments, with the profits being donated to cancer hospitals to support patients and their families. Organizing this tournament was no small feat, especially for someone like me who identifies as an introvert. One of my weaknesses is my reluctance to connect with people, but this project pushed me out of my comfort zone. To ensure the success of the tournament, I had to communicate with potential participants, negotiate with sponsors, and collaborate with my team. This experience helped me develop my skills as a communicator and taught me the importance of building connections to achieve a common goal. The tournament saw the participation of 60 individuals, and I was able to secure two sponsorships, which was a significant achievement for me. This success was a result of being open-minded—I welcomed new ideas, adapted to challenges, and remained flexible throughout the planning process. Additionally, being reflective allowed me to evaluate my progress, learn from my mistakes, and make improvements along the way.

LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth
Through this experience, I recognized my strengths in planning and execution, as I was able to organize a large-scale event successfully. My ability to strategize, delegate tasks, and maintain focus throughout the process helped ensure the tournament ran smoothly. However, I also became aware of an area for growth—communication. Being an introvert, I initially found it difficult to connect with people for registrations and sponsorships. Stepping out of my comfort zone and actively engaging with participants and sponsors helped me improve my confidence in networking. This experience has encouraged me to continue developing my interpersonal skills, which will be valuable in future endeavors.

LO2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills

Organizing a tournament of this scale was a significant challenge, especially as it required me to step into unfamiliar roles such as event management, marketing, and networking. I had to learn how to create promotional materials, manage registrations, and coordinate with sponsors—all of which were new experiences for me. Additionally, overcoming my introversion to interact with strangers and build relationships was a personal challenge that helped me develop resilience and adaptability. These new skills have not only contributed to the success of the tournament but have also prepared me for future endeavors

LO3: Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience

The idea for this project was entirely my own, born out of my passion for sports and my desire to make a difference in society. I took the initiative to conceptualize the tournament, set clear goals, and create a detailed plan to execute it. This involved researching the logistics of organizing a sports event, creating a timeline, delegating tasks to my team, and ensuring that every aspect of the tournament was well-coordinated. Planning this CAS experience from scratch taught me the importance of foresight, organization, and leadership, and it was incredibly rewarding to see my vision come to life.

LO4: Show Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience

Organizing this tournament required consistent effort over four months, testing my perseverance and commitment. There were times when things did not go as planned, such as facing delays in securing sponsorships or struggling to get enough participants. Despite these setbacks, I remained dedicated to my goal. I constantly refined my approach, reaching out to more people, adjusting promotional strategies, and finding alternative ways to make the tournament successful. Balancing this project with my academic responsibilities was also a challenge, but my dedication to making a positive impact kept me motivated. Seeing the event come to life after months of hard work was incredibly rewarding and reinforced the importance of persistence.

LO5: Demonstrate Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively

While I initiated the project, its success was a collective effort. I worked closely with my friends and family, dividing responsibilities such as marketing, logistics, and sponsor coordination. Collaborating with others taught me the value of teamwork, effective communication, and leveraging individual strengths to achieve a common goal. For instance, while I focused on planning and organization, my friends helped with promoting the event and managing registrations. This collaborative approach not only made the workload more manageable but also enriched the experience by incorporating diverse perspectives and ideas. The success of the tournament was a testament to the power of teamwork, and it reinforced my belief in the importance of collaboration in achieving meaningful outcomes.

LO6: Engagement With Issues of Global Significance

Cancer is a major global health concern, affecting millions of lives worldwide. By donating the proceeds of this tournament to Mahavir Cancer Hospital, I aimed to contribute to the fight against this disease. Although my efforts may seem small in the larger scheme of things, they are part of a broader initiative to support cancer treatment and raise awareness about health-related issues. Additionally, promoting sports through this event aligns with the importance of physical activity in preventing various health conditions, reinforcing the message of SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. This experience made me realize how even a local initiative can contribute to a larger global cause.

LO7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions

Throughout the tournament, I ensured that ethical considerations were at the forefront of my decisions. From the fair organization of matches to responsible financial management, maintaining transparency was essential. I made sure that the registration process was unbiased, ensuring that every participant had an equal opportunity to compete. Additionally, when handling sponsorships and donations, I remained accountable for every financial transaction, making sure that the funds were properly allocated toward the intended cause. Upholding integrity in sports was also crucial—I ensured that all players followed the rules and that fair play was maintained throughout the tournament. This experience reinforced the importance of ethical decision-making, not just in event management but in all aspects of life.

Conclusion

This tournament was a transformative experience that helped me grow as a leader, communicator, and team player. It reinforced the importance of perseverance, ethical decision-making, and social impact through sports. Overcoming challenges and working collaboratively made the event successful and meaningful. This experience has inspired me to continue organizing sports events for a greater cause.
