Community Service – Calisthenics

We conducted a calisthenics training session for 3 weekends for children from underprivileged schools who joined our school. The activity exposed these children to fundamental fitness principles and physical well-being through exercise techniques that do not need equipment. My goal was to establish an interactive setting supporting student learning of fundamental calisthenics while teaching physical activity benefits and building their confidence in their skills. To enhance my abilities I targeted developing better teamwork and leadership skills and communication through making beneficial changes to child health and lifestyles.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

The biggest challenge was getting the children, to be ready to participate in the calesthenics sessions because they had no experience with organized physical activities. I improved my teaching approach by dividing the tasks, providing assistance, and incorporating enjoyable and interactive activities in the lessons. We were able to overcome this challenge through collaboration because my colleagues and I worked closely together. I increased my leadership and communication confidence because I could deliver and share ideas effectively. This skill will benefit my future undertakings of managing a team or leading people. Through this assignment, I learned to become patient and adaptable due to the effort I dedicated to it. It is a valuable reminder that in order to develop as a people and contribute to society, one needs to acquire new skills.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Collaborating with my team to create a formal schedule for the callisthenics sessions kept me organized. We ensured we had a precise schedule to follow, delegated tasks to one another, and planned workouts in advance. While I believe I’m highly organized, this activity needed more attention especially regarding effectively managing time and coordinating with team members. As it required the formation of bond with the children and ensuring that they felt comfortable enough to be involved altough starting out was tough. This later became easier over time with detailed planning. I acquired the skill of planning and executing the courses efficiently through developing skills such as time management, coordination with peers, and being adaptable. My confidence in planning and initiating activities has grown as a direct result of this learning experience and I believe it will be easier in the future because I now understand how important organisation and preparation are. The skill to plan and initiate activities is vital because it helps achieving of certain goals, ensures correct resource utilisation, and makes the implementation easy all of which enhances the final outcome.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

I find it usually easy to collaborate with others as I enjoy sharing ideas, cooperating, and learning new views. Collaboration with my group during this service was relatively easy because we all shared a common goal, which was educating the children in the correct way. In order to facilitate sessions to proceed without any major issues, we divided tasks, assisted each other, and communicated effectively. Occasionally, there were some disagreements regarding the structure of the sessions. I controlled this by keeping calm, observing other individuals, and reaching an agreement that favoured everyone. Working together strengthens problem solving ability, and enables effectively reaching objectives. Teamwork was necessary for the classes to be effectively organized and in order for them to be appropriately planned and administered. We could mentor and interact with the children due to leadership. Both ensured that the classess was both beneficial and enjoyable for all the students and my peers.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The absence of chances for exercise and other physical activities among poor communities is the world problem I worked on. This is a big problem throughout the world because most people do not have the information to make sure regular exercise is part of their lifestyle, even though it is vital to health and wellness. While observing inequalities in fitness advice, I came to realize this issue. Knowing about issues such as these in the world makes me develop as a person by becoming more proactive in seeking solutions and being more compassionate overall. I have a tremendous sense of responsibility to assist in closing these gaps. I was motivated by this CAS experience because I knew that, in a small way, my work can enhance children’s health, self esteem, and their way of living a healthy life.

I acquired learner profile attributes of Caring and Communicator from this experience. The process of instructing callisthenics to disadvantaged children demanded empathy, transparency in communication, and focusing on promoting physical wellness. The excitement and assurance on the faces of the children upon learning a new thing were the most impressive part of this experience. My beliefs as a caring professional were reinforced, yet I began to realize also how small acts could have huge impacts as well. In addition to learning flexibility, leadership, and patience, this experience allowed me to gain an excellent sense of accomplishment. In order to maintain the interest of the children even further, I would introduce extra interactive activities if I did it again. I will be able to make use of the skills I acquired such as leadership and collaboration in future group work and activities. I am inspired to contribute to overall fitness activities for all from this CAS experience. It showed me how behaviour and decisions demonstrate compassion, empathy, and respect, encouragin creative thinking in overcoming challenges while being in a safe environment.
