Community Service

I was given an amazing opportunity of teaching Maths to the student of government school who come from an underprivileged background. I got a chance to spread my knowledge of Maths to students in need which allowed me to improve upon various different skills and lead to personal growth.

Learning Outcome 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

  • When I was preparing for community service, I recognized my strengths which was maths. I’m pretty good at maths and also know the ways I can make maths easy to learn. However, there were a few areas where I was needed improve. One of those areas was to improve upon my confidence level and communication skills. At the start, I was not at all confident and was worried whether I will do great or no, but as the day passed, I was able to improve upon my confidence level and was no more scared and was confident enough to teach the whole class on my own without needing help of anyone. Likewise, I was able to improve my communication skills when teaching which helped me be a good communicator at the end of the community service.

Learning Outcome 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.

  • Teaching students maths was a big challenge since I have never in my life taught anyone especially so many students at a same time. So when it was time for me to teach those students, I faced some difficulty in communicating with them and teaching them since I can teach maximum 3 people who are my friend but teaching kids who I have never met in my life was a different task. However, as the days went by, I was able to improve upon my communication skill and thinking skill. As said above, I improved my communication skill and got to know how to communicate fluently without facing any issue. Furthermore, I even improved my thinking skills since every time I went to teach the students, I was required to think the ways in which I can teach such that the concept is conveyed and it is fun. So me and my friends decided to teach different concepts such as addition and multiplication by using fun objects such as blocks and games such as tic-tac-toe which made learning more fun and even effective.

Learning Outcome 5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

  • Teaching students maths was not just a solo task, instead, it was a group task where 3-4 of my friends came together and taught the same class. The first day was pretty difficult since we had almost no coordination on what to teach and how to teach which lead to further complications, but the next day, after some planning and brainstorming, we were able to teach as a group with no complications. Teaching as a group allowed me to become improve upon my social skills since I cooperated, accepted the responsibility I got and made decision as a group to further ease our work since the concepts which could take up to multiple months just took us a couple of weeks to teach as a group.

Learning Outcome 6 – Engagement with issues of global significance.

  • Quality education is something which everyone should have access to no matter their class and their race. But in today’s world, due to such discrimination, many of the poor people are not able to get the education they should. Furthermore, since they are poor, they are not accepted everywhere and mostly get rejected due to the inequality in the world. But this project allowed me to work upon those issues and clear the gap between of lack of education.

To conclude, community service was a great experience, I got a chance to improve and learn new skills such as social and communication skills. Moreover, community service did not just benefit me, but it even benefited the students who came to learn maths. After 3 weeks of community service, they were able to learn multiple new concepts of maths in a fun way. I even displayed the learner profile Communicators and Open minded when attending community service. Overall, I believe it was a success since it allowed me to grow as a person and made me learn various things.
