Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a local pickleball tournament, and it was an eye-opening experience that demonstrated not only the physical demands of the sport but also the importance of strategy, communication, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The tournament was not only a great way to test my physical endurance and sportsmanship, but also provided me with valuable learning outcomes that contributed to my personal growth.
LO1- Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
I quickly recognized areas for improvement. My serves were inconsistent, and my footwork was not as quick as I would have liked. However, I also discovered my strengths—such as my ability to remain calm under pressure and my strong communication with my doubles partner. This tournament allowed me to set clear goals for myself moving forward—whether it’s improving my serve technique or working on my endurance—and to gain a deeper understanding of how to balance my strengths and weaknesses.
LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.
The tournament provided me with a unique opportunity to develop new technical skills that I hadn’t fully explored before. For example, I significantly improved my understanding of game strategy, such as how to control the “kitchen” area of the court and how to place shots effectively to create openings. I also learned how to make quicker decisions under pressure—something I hadn’t experienced in casual practice sessions.
LO5- Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
One of the most significant aspects of my participation in the pickleball tournament was working as part of a doubles team. In doubles, communication and teamwork are essential to success, and this tournament provided the perfect opportunity to practice and refine these skills.
Conclusion-
Participating in the pickleball tournament was an enriching experience that helped me develop valuable life skills, particularly in areas of collaboration. Through both the highs and lows of the competition, I was able to learn more about myself and work towards improving in key areas like communication, consistency, and teamwork. The tournament also reinforced the importance of staying committed and focused, even when things don’t go as planned.
