Abal Nahi Sabal- Creativity

As part of my CAS experience, we worked with ‘Abal Nahi Sabal,’ an organisation that provides employment opportunities for individuals with special needs. Our task was to enhance their handmade bags by painting original designs, making them more visually appealing and marketable. The goal was to help increase their sales while promoting an inclusive environment where creativity and productivity go hand in hand. This initiative sought to challenge societal biases by demonstrating that everyone, regardless of ability, is capable of meaningful work. Throughout this experience, I not only contributed to a cause I deeply care about but also gained valuable insights into inclusivity, teamwork, and perseverance.

LO1: Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth

Since childhood, I have been passionate about art, and this experience allowed me to apply my skills to something purposeful. My ability to create detailed designs helped elevate the appearance of the bags. However, I quickly realized that artistic talent alone wasn’t enough—I had to consider what would appeal to potential buyers. This required me to strike a balance between creativity and practicality, which pushed me to think beyond aesthetics. Additionally, working on textured materials taught me the importance of patience and adaptability, as multiple coats of paint were needed to achieve a polished look. And I had to be heedful that I can’t mess up as I had limited bags and that I cannot go over my mistakes again.

LO2: Taking on Challenges and Developing New Skills

A major challenge in this project was adjusting my painting techniques to suit the uneven surfaces of the bags. Some materials absorbed paint unpredictably, making it difficult to achieve consistent, vibrant colors. Another challenge that I came across was that the paint could bleed easily despite having a layer of cardboard underneath the bag, which led me to ensure I had to perfect the paint consistency to avoid seeping and visible patches. I had to experiment with different methods to ensure durability and visual appeal. Another challenge was managing my time effectively, as I had to balance this project with my academic workload. This experience helped me improve my problem-solving skills and efficiency, allowing me to work within constraints while maintaining quality.

LO4: Demonstrating Commitment and Perseverance

Painting the bags was a meticulous and time-intensive process, requiring a high level of dedication. At times, the workload felt overwhelming, but I kept reminding myself of the purpose behind our efforts—every bit of effort we put in contributed to a greater cause. Despite the challenges, I remained focused on delivering quality work. By the end of the project, seeing the completed bags ready for sale was incredibly rewarding and reinforced my belief that persistence leads to meaningful change.

LO5: Collaboration and Teamwork

Teamwork played a crucial role in the success of this initiative. While I concentrated on painting, other members handled tasks like organizing materials, coordinating with the organization, and preparing the bags for sale. Clear communication was essential in ensuring everything ran smoothly. Additionally, working alongside neurodivergent individuals gave me a deeper understanding of their experiences. Their dedication and passion for their craft reinforced the importance of creating inclusive opportunities where everyone can thrive.

LO6: Engaging with Issues of Global Significance

This project addressed the global issue of employment inequality for people with disabilities. Many individuals with special needs face significant barriers in securing meaningful work due to societal biases and a lack of inclusive opportunities. By participating in this initiative, I played a small role in raising awareness and advocating for inclusivity. Moreover, this project aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals of Decent Work and Economic Growth and Reducing Inequality. It made me realize that even seemingly small contributions—like painting a bag—can collectively lead to larger societal change.

Final Reflection

This CAS experience was about much more than art—it was about empowerment, inclusivity, and challenging societal norms. Through creativity, teamwork, and perseverance, I was able to contribute to a cause that extends beyond aesthetics. This experience reinforced how small efforts can make a meaningful difference in creating opportunities for those who are often overlooked. More importantly, I left with a profound appreciation for the resilience and potential of neurodivergent individuals and a strengthened commitment to fostering a world where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and succeed.
