BalMela

Bal Mela was a unique and fulfilling experience where children from underprivileged schools visited our school for a day filled with interactive learning and fun activities. I was part of the basketball group, where we introduced the children to the fundamentals of basketball, teaching them basic passing, and shooting techniques. Our goal was to create an engaging and enjoyable environment while giving them an opportunity to explore a new sport.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

One of the biggest challenges was teaching basketball to children who had little to no prior experience with the sport. We had to simplify our approach, breaking down each movement into easy to follow steps. Many of the kids were hesitant at first, unsure of how to make a shot. Patience, adaptability, and clear communication were key in helping them grasp the basics. By the end of the session, seeing their excitement as they successfully made a basket was extremely rewarding.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.

Since many of the children were new to the sport, progress was slow. Some struggled with power, while others needed constant encouragement to keep trying. Despite these challenges, I remained committed to ensuring that every child had a equal experience. Instead of focusing on technical perfection, I encouraged them to enjoy the game and simply have fun. This experience reinforced the importance of persistence and maintaining a positive attitude, even when things don’t go as planned.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

Teaching a group of energetic children required seamless teamwork. We divided tasks among ourselves some of us focused on demonstrating techniques, while others guided individual children and ensured everyone was involved. Without teamwork, the session would have been chaotic. By working together efficiently, we ensured that every child received attention and felt encouraged to participate. This experience strengthened my collaborative skills and showed me how important it is to work towards a shared goal.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
Access to sports is often limited for underprivileged children, which creates impact in their overall development. Through Balmela, we helped cater to this issue by introducing basketball to children who might not have had the opportunity to play before. This experience showed the importance of equal access to activities, as sports not only improve physical health but also teaches discipline and confidence. By participating in this event, I gained a deeper understanding of the role sports can play in fostering inclusivity and development.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
During Bal Mela, it was important to ensure that every child felt included and had an equal opportunity to participate. Since they came from different backgrounds, we made sure to be patient and encouraging, especially for those who were new to basketball. We also had to be mindful of safety and fairness, ensuring that everyone got a chance to play without feeling left out. This experience helped me understand the importance of making choices in group activities, where inclusivity and respect play a key role.
