Competing in a weightlifting competition was a significant milestone in my CAS journey, both physically and mentally. Not only did I secure 3rd place, winning a bronze medal and a certificate, but the process itself was an invaluable learning experience. Reflecting on the learning outcomes (LO1, LO2, LO4) during and after the competition, I can confidently say that I have grown in many ways—both as an athlete and as an individual.
LO1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.
Participating in the weightlifting competition made me realize my physical strengths and also highlighted areas where I needed to improve. One of my key strengths was my discipline and determination in training. I had always been consistent with my workouts, but this competition pushed me to dig deeper into my potential. I learned that my ability to focus under pressure and maintain a strong mindset helped me perform at my best when it counted.
However, the competition also showed me areas where I could grow. For example, I noticed that my technique in certain lifts needed refinement. While I was strong enough to lift the weights, my form wasn’t always perfect. This was an area I needed to focus on if I wanted to continue improving. The competition made me aware of my weaknesses, allowing me to set specific goals for future growth.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
The preparation for the competition involved many challenges, from managing time between my schoolwork and training to overcoming physical and mental barriers. One of the toughest parts was increasing the intensity of my training, which meant pushing my body further than I had ever done before. I had to learn how to recover properly, understand my body’s limits, and find ways to stay motivated despite the fatigue.
Additionally, I had to develop new technical skills in weightlifting. This included mastering proper lifting techniques, such as maintaining posture and using the right form to avoid injury. Learning from my coach and practicing regularly helped me gradually refine my technique. Throughout this process, I was continuously faced with challenges, but with each hurdle, I gained new skills that prepared me for the competition.
LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
Committing to the weightlifting competition required months of dedicated training. I had to remain consistent with my workouts, even on days when I didn’t feel like it or when my body was sore from previous sessions. There were moments when I doubted myself, especially when I didn’t hit my target weights or when I struggled to improve my form. But the thought of competing and the possibility of achieving something I had worked so hard for kept me going.
The perseverance I demonstrated throughout this journey paid off when I stood on the podium to receive my bronze medal. The sense of accomplishment was immeasurable, not only because of the physical achievement but because I had stayed committed to my goal despite the challenges I faced along the way. The competition wasn’t just about winning; it was about proving to myself that hard work, dedication, and perseverance can overcome any obstacle.
Conclusion
Competing in the weightlifting competition was a truly transformative experience. It allowed me to identify my strengths, address areas for improvement, and develop new skills that I will continue to use in the future. The challenges I faced along the way taught me the importance of perseverance and the value of staying committed to my goals, no matter how difficult the journey may be.
This experience fully embodied the spirit of CAS, where I not only had the opportunity to pursue a passion but also grew in ways that I didn’t expect. Winning the bronze medal was a tangible result of my efforts, but the personal growth and lessons learned were the most rewarding parts of this experience. I look forward to applying these lessons in all future endeavors, both inside and outside the gym.
