ISSO karate 2025-26 U-19 (activity)

Participating in the ISSO (International Schools Sports Organization) Under-19 Karate Tournament hosted by The Cathedral and John Connon School was a truly unforgettable experience. It pushed me to test my abilities against some of the best competitors. It wasn’t just about winning—it was about learning, evolving, and pushing past my limits. As part of my CAS (Activity) experience, the tournament allowed me to develop essential skills while showing resilience and commitment.

LO1: Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth
This tournament offered an ideal chance to assess both my strengths and areas that needed development. My agility, speed, and defensive techniques during kumite (sparring) helped me secure crucial wins. However, I realized that my kata (form demonstrations) required more accuracy and fluidity. Competing at this level made me more aware of these gaps and inspired me to work harder on refining my performance.

LO2: Taking on Challenges and Developing New Skills
Facing off against highly skilled players from different schools exposed me to a wide range of techniques and strategies. The competition presented both physical and mental challenges—I had to think quickly, adjust my style, and effectively counter my opponents. This experience sharpened my karate skills and also enhanced my ability to think critically under pressure, a skill applicable far beyond sports.

LO4: Demonstrating Perseverance and Commitment
Preparing for the tournament took immense dedication and effort. Balancing karate training with academics and other commitments was tough, but I stayed focused. I gave my all in every match, even after setbacks like losing in the semifinals. Winning two gold medals—in both kata and kumite—was a moment of immense pride. However, what I value most is the journey itself, which deepened my understanding of perseverance, discipline, and personal growth.

LO7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions
Throughout the tournament, I made a conscious effort to uphold the values of respect, fairness, and sportsmanship—both on and off the mat. In karate, it’s easy to let competitiveness take over, but I reminded myself to compete with integrity, respecting my opponents and the rules of the sport. These ethical choices reflected not just my character as a martial artist, but also my responsibility as a representative of my school and the values of CAS.

The ISSO karate tournament was more than a competition—it was a transformative experience that helped me grow as both a martial artist and an individual. I walked away with valuable insights, improved skills, and a renewed passion for karate. This experience has fueled my ambition to aim even higher and pursue greater achievements in the future.
