Karuna Club – Service

Karuna, a sanskrit word that means compassion or mercy. On the principles of compassion, the Karuna club was founded by Hitaishi Somani, I am also a part of the core team in the club as the social media manager. Our club is dedicated to feeding and protecting the street dogs, our club functions by the belief that every life matters – whether humans or animals. We also aim to foster a more empathetic society and we already have a large scale of volunteers with us to create an impact!

LO 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

Feeding the stray dogs is not easy, its a tough task as they tend to be very aggressive and most of them are even provided with proper medication which includes vaccinations that are vital for dogs. This was one of the biggest challenges which we faced because we had to handle them in a calm manner and ensure that they do not bite us. Adding on, we also had to be mindful about some of the dogs that had diseases because they could be harmful and injurious to humans as well. They usually used to bark a lot at first but once they started getting familiar to us, they became friendlier and through the same, I was able to develop my communication skills. Patience was also an essential skill which I developed through this experience

LO 3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience

Before any drive which is conducted, there is a lot of planning and coordination required amongst the core team. We have to decide the resources required, venue, and manage the funds accordingly. We gain funds by conducting multiple bake sales, workshops, and plan to increase the ideas in future! As a club, we also look at the nutrient values of the food which we are going to feed the street dogs so that they are healthy and fit. Once our drive ends, we upload a reel on Instagram which helps us increase our reach and message towards everyone.

LO 4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

Feeding street dogs is not only about an act of kindness or giving back to the society, it requires dedication and consistency. At first we thought that it would be tough for us to reach out to multiple dogs in different areas but we ensured that we went for the drives early in the morning so that we are able to reach out to a higher number. After the first session, I was able to realise how starved the animals living on the streets are, and that increased my commitment towards Karuna club regardless of any work constraints.

LO 5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

Karuna Club has a lot of volunteers who are dedicated and compelled towards the aim and vision. A lot of teamwork and collective efforts are required to make the club a success, from planning out sessions to feeding the dogs to making the reel for more people to reach out for a better cause. Keen students are required as volunteers so that they actively give ideas and help out with the execution. Hence, this experience has allowed me to improve my social skills and also helped me to communicate with others in a better manner.

LO 6 – Engagement with issues of global significance

According to Times of India, there are approximately 6.2 crores stray dogs and 91 lakh street cats in India. Most of them suffer from malnutrition and lack of medical care, making it a global concern. It becomes our ethical responsibility to take steps towards their betterment as they are being neglected and as a club we try to include sustainable solutions that would benefit both the humans and the dogs. Observing the results of our feeding efforts got me thinking about how little, regular acts might add up to a bigger animal compassion movement.

Overall, being a part of Karuna Club has been a great experience. I was able to learn a lot which includes teamwork and problem-solving skills, while also working on my social skills and communication skills. The learner profile which I was able to develop through this experience is caring and risk-takers, I was able to feed the dogs without any hesitation as I attended a session on how to handle dogs with care and I also have pet dogs. Compassion is not measured by the size of our actions, but by the consistency of our kindness!
