ISSO under 19 basketball

ISSO is a national basketball event where IB schools from all around India participate and compete to win the championship. I have participated in 1 edition of ISSO previously and it has been a huge part of my personal growth.

LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

I have been persuing basket since the past 3 years, and like any other growth journey, I have grown from the ground up. As mentioned previously, I have been to one ISSO previously and I have learnt a lot from my mistakes, such as mis-passes, mis-shots and mis-coordination with the team that costed us some wins and many times major points. By working upon my shooting, dribbling and passing; the three fundamentals of basketball, I worked upon my weaknesses and turned them into areas of strengths. Although, I also worked upon something I noticed was my strength, defence, where I learned some advance footworks allowing me to defend the opponent properly.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.

The challenge that I faced the most in this particular field was mobility and a non-fit and non-athletic body which did not allow me to perform to my best of abilities. And hence after the pervious ISSO I took upon me to solve this problem which could only be done through proper food, nutrition and exercise and in order for that I had gain a certain knowledge about that. To begin with, I joined a gym where I took help of a floor trainer where he recommended a set of exercises to me in order to prepair my body for intense workouts in the future. Along with that I talked to other people in the gym such as people who had a built physique about the nutrition they take and they said that food that has higher protien and low calories is required for loosing fat while building muscle, a fact I confirmed from external research. I used my mothers help to increase protien sources such as eggs in my diet and the results started to show, in my body and my basketball game, I gain speed, power and agility allowing me to improve my game and overcome the challenge.

LO 5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

Basket ball is a team game where 5 players play the game while the others sit outside and cheer, provide the playing 5 with water and other things. While the in 5 keep changing with the bench players, I have learnt in both the places. While playing in the in 5, I have learnt how important is it for one to coordinate with each and every one of their team mates along with learning my shortcomings in the game. While sitting on the bench, I learnt how each member, wether playing or not plays a major role the performance of the team and how being selfless in such scenarios is important. This will significantly help me later in life as I will know how to work with a team to either build a business or to complete an assignment or anything else.
