Divyang – Service

My friend and I collaborated on a service project wherein we created an NGO, Divyang, to teach blind children the beautiful game of football. Divyang’s vision was majorly fostering inclusivity, we aimed to empower blind children by providing them with an opportunity to engage in football to nurture their confidence, teamwork, and other skills.

Our mission reflects the belief that blindness may limit vision but not the spirit or potential of an individual. Through this initiative, we sought to break down barriers and demonstrate that every child deserves the chance to dream, play, and achieve. Football became a medium through which we could connect, inspire, and celebrate the courage of these children. By designing adaptive training techniques and fostering an inclusive environment, we empowered the children to embrace their abilities and build their confidence, one kick at a time.

We began by assessing the specific needs of blind children and how football could be adapted for them. We researched adaptive sports techniques, particularly the use of sound-emitting footballs and clear verbal communication, to make the sessions both effective and enjoyable.

Planning was critical to the success of this initiative. We first prepared motivational activities to create a positive and supportive environment. After that we partnered with the blind school to understand the children’s needs and designed football exercises that incorporated audible cues and safe movements. Furthermore, we also sourced specialised sound-emitting footballs to enhance accessibility.

We conducted regular training sessions at the school. Each session was structured to include warm-ups, drills, and interactive exercises that emphasised skill development. The children used their sense of hearing and touch to navigate the game, showcasing remarkable resilience and determination.

Learning Outcomes Achieved:

LO1. Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:

This project helped us identify our strengths in empathy, adaptability, and leadership. We also recognized areas for growth, such as patience and the ability to communicate clearly in challenging situations. By reflecting on these experiences, we became more confident and resourceful individuals.

LO2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process:

Adapting football training to meet the needs of blind children required us to develop innovative teaching methods and learn how to work effectively in a specialized environment. Overcoming these challenges expanded our skill sets and deepened our understanding of inclusivity.

LO5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:

The success of this project was rooted in collaboration—between us, the school staff, and the children. By pooling our efforts and working as a team, we created an environment where the children felt supported and motivated.

LO6. Engagement with issues of global significance:

By promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities in sports, our project tackled the global challenge of ensuring accessibility for individuals with disabilities. We contributed to breaking stereotypes and creating a more equitable society.

Our experience at the blind school taught us that true ability lies not in what one sees but in the courage and determination to overcome challenges. Through football, we celebrated the spirit of resilience and unity, fostering confidence and joy among the children. This initiative reinforced our commitment to advocating for an inclusive world, one where every individual has the chance to shine.
