Engagement in the Penn Sem Business Competition was a challenging but very enriching experience that challenged my problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork skills. I and my team engaged in the development of an original business concept, market research, and pitching our strategy to a group of judges. In the process, I faced challenges that compelled me to adjust, think creatively, and hone my business skills. Me and my team secured second position in India , third position in asia and qualified for top 16 in the world .
LO 1 : Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
This competition allowed me to identify my strengths and areas where I needed to improve. My most important strength was my capacity to break down problems into pieces, analyze them, and find innovativesolutions. I came to understand that I could strategically think about consumer demand and market trends, which influenced our business model. I also discovered that I had a good capacity for conveying my ideas effectively, thus easy to make meaningful inputs in team discussion. But I also learned where I needed to improve. One of the biggest challenges for me was grasping financial modeling, as initially I found itdifficult to devise realistic cost forecasts and revenue projections. I needed to consult my team members and study various money-makingstrategies in order to shore up this element of our business plan. This experience taught me the value of flexibility and constant learning in the business world.
LO 2 : Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken developing new skills
The competition stretched me out of my comfort zone, compelling me to learn new skills in business strategy, finance, and marketing. Translating our idea into a viable business model in a short amount of time was one of the greatest challenges. It was intimidating to handle multiple sides of our plan presentation, financials, branding, and market research while keeping everything unified and engaging. This competition was between my academic year hence it was difficult for me to manage my studies and work rigorously on this project but towards the end of this experience I developed self management skills and did good in both exams and the business competition.
LO 3 : Initiate and Plan a CAS experience
Developing a well-organized and well-researched business plan needed good organizational abilities and planning. Right from the start, my group and I delegated work according to our strengths—some of us worked on financial planning, others on market research, and some on branding and presentation. This division of labor enabled us to remain efficient and enabled each of us to contribute significantly to the project. As much as we planned, unforeseen difficulties came up. Some of our early market assumptions weren’t backed by data, and we had to make a course correction and modify our approach. We needed to stay agile while ensuring that our original concept was still robust. This experience emphasized the need to strike a balance between preparation and flexibility in an ever-changing situation.
LO 4 : Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
Competition involved long periods of hard work and dedication spanning many weeks. With the approaching deadline, workload was heavier and needed long periods of brainstorming, research, and practice. There were instances when our proposals didn’t sound plausible, and we were lured to become despondent. Instead, however, of giving up on it, we persisted in ironing out our business model to make it robust. Perseverance came in particularly handy when rehearsing for the pitch. We were forced to make tremendous changes to our presentation while maintaining motivation and focus. The hard work was finally worth it as we confidently gave our final pitch. This taught us once again that persistence and resilience are the most crucial elements towards attaining success, particularly under pressure.
LO 5 : Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
Teamwork made the competition easier. All of us had varying strengths, and the key to our success was utilizing them well. We learned to work collectively, polish ideas, critique each other’s assumptions, and integrate these into a balanced business plan. At first, coordination was an issue because everyone had varying methods and ideas. But with effective open communication and compromising, we were able to incorporate our views into a common vision. Also, collaboration was necessary when dealing with stress and failures. When one of us was overwhelmed, the others came in to provide support and encouragement. This experience reaffirmed the importance of teamwork—not only in task division but in creating a positive and productive team environment.
Conclusion
The Penn Sem Business Competition was a wake-up call that made me think creatively, learn rapidly, and work together. From generating creative ideas to perfecting our pitch, each phase of the competition challenged me to enhance problem-solving abilities, perseverance, and faith in my capabilities. I learned how to prioritize tasks, work under pressure, and present intricate concepts in an engaging manner. More significantly, the experience reminded me of the worth of teamwork and of the need to balance creativity with practicality. In retrospect, I’m thankful for the experience and for what I learned, and I’m confident that the skills I learned will be useful in challenges yet to come.
