RURAL IMMERSION (CAS TRIP)

Activity: Rural Immersion Program
Location: Dang Mokhamal, Gujarat
CAS Strand(s): Activity, Service

Experience Overview:

Participating in the 7-day Rural Immersion Program in Dang Mokhamal was a transformative experience that challenged my lifestyle, values, and perspective. Living without technology in a remote village, we immersed ourselves in the daily lives of the local community. Our activities included teaching children at a government school, organizing games and creative sessions, cooking meals, going on forest treks, and even learning welding to construct a flower vine stand. This immersive experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and deepened my understanding of the simplicity, resilience, and dignity of rural life.

Learning Outcomes Achieved:

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:
This experience helped me recognize my adaptability and ability to connect with people from different backgrounds. I discovered strengths in communication and leadership while also identifying areas for improvement, particularly my patience when teaching young children in resource-limited settings.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process:
Facing challenges like cooking with basic utensils, living without electricity or a mobile network, and teaching in non-traditional classrooms helped me develop valuable skills such as lesson planning, teamwork, creative problem-solving, and basic welding techniques.

LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience:
As a team, we collaboratively planned daily schedules, designed lessons, divided responsibilities (such as cooking), and organized group activities. This taught me how to plan efficiently, delegate tasks, and adapt to unexpected situations.

LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences:
Despite physical and mental discomfort, I remained engaged throughout the program. I consistently participated in every task—teaching, trekking, cooking, and building—with dedication and a positive attitude.

LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:
Teamwork was central to this experience. Whether coordinating meals, planning lessons, or entertaining children, we relied on mutual support, active listening, and compromise to work effectively together.

LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance:
Teaching in the government school exposed me to the reality of educational inequality and its long-term implications. This experience made me reflect on the global challenge of ensuring access to quality education and showed how grassroots efforts can contribute to meaningful change.

LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions:
Engaging with a rural community made me more conscious of our ethical responsibilities as visitors. We took care to respect their customs, minimize waste, and ensure our contributions were thoughtful and non-intrusive.

Reflection:

The Rural Immersion Program was a humbling and eye-opening journey. I learned to value life’s essentials, approach service with empathy, and collaborate effectively in unfamiliar environments. The absence of technology encouraged deeper connections—with both people and nature. Welding the flower vine stand was a memorable highlight, reminding me how hands-on work can also be a form of service. This experience changed how I perceive development, privilege, and responsible volunteering.

Future Goals:

  • Participate in more grassroots-level service projects
  • Enhance my teaching, communication, and planning skills
  • Explore sustainable rural development models and their global relevance
  • Raise awareness about educational inequality and promote ethical service practices
