Volunteering during the University Fair was a great way to get involved in service, build organizational and interpersonal skills, and gain experience in event management. It gave me hands-on experience in managing events while being part of a greater community cause.
Description: I volunteered for a University Fair with more than 90 universities participating. I worked on stall installations, processed participant registrations, helped guide participants, and facilitated event flow.
Volunteering at the University Fair was a great way to build organizational and interpersonal skills. The event had hundreds of students and parents attending, so it was critical that volunteers coordinated the flow and offered correct information.
Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth (LO1): My greatest strength was communication. I was happy to show people to where they needed to go and to respond to questions regarding the event. I saw that I also had to develop stress management in terms of what I did at peak times when there were masses of people and it felt over-powering.
Show Challenges Faced and Acquire New Skills (LO2): Coordinating the entry of participants and delivering the required material to everyone was challenging when many schools came at the same time. To address this challenge, I created a division of labor among volunteers to make it efficient and minimize waiting time.
Show Commitment and Perseverance (LO4): The event lasted an entire day, requiring constant attention and energy. There were moments when fatigue set in, but my commitment to ensuring a positive experience for attendees kept me motivated. Taking short breaks and staying hydrated helped me maintain my focus.
Demonstrate Skills and Identify the Advantage of Cooperation (LO5): Working in coordination with other volunteers was paramount for the event to be a success. We would talk constantly to ensure each other knew their duties and nothing was left behind. Like one person had one job and the other had another. Like the time when I had to get paint but I forgot but my other friend had gotten it for me.
I learned the value of teamwork, flexibility, and resilience from this experience. I discovered that successful event management involves not just careful planning but also having the capacity to think on the spot. I have been encouraged by this experience to look for more opportunities to help organize community events and to further develop my leadership skills.
