Barista course was to experience creativity using a hands-on skill. It was not solely about coffee; it was all about learning what artistry enters into every cup while perfecting precision and serving.
I took a Barista course handled by Kokoro, where we learned different ways of making coffees, which include brewing systems such as espresso, cappuccino, latte, and cold brew. I did customer service practicing and latte art as well.

Taking the Barista course was an eye-opening experience that had a mix of creativity and functional skills. While I have loved coffee all my life, the course opened up the art and science of how to brew the perfect cup of coffee. Starting from learning the various coffee beans to operating the espresso machine like a pro, each step was challenging yet worthwhile.
Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth (LO1): I was surprised by one of my first realizations throughout the course, which was my attention to detail. Developing the ideal shot of espresso needed precision, from grinding the coffee beans to properly tamping them. I naturally gravitated toward this precise process. I had difficulty with multitasking, however, when making multiple drinks at once. This experience taught me the importance of improved time management and task prioritization.
Demonstrate Challenges Undertaken and Develop New Skills (LO2): The course most difficult section was latte art. It needed not just technical skill but also a steady hand and a bit of creative flair. My early attempts were not exactly perfect, but after practice and advice from the teacher, I became much more confident. This experience taught me about the value of perseverance and the value of accepting mistakes in the process of learning.
Demonstrate Skills and Appreciate the Value of Working Together (LO5): Having other participants to work with enriched the experience even more. We exchanged tips, motivated one another, and even had friendly competitions on who could make the most beautiful latte art. Working together made learning fun and less stressful.
Beyond the technical skills, the course taught me about customer service and the importance of creating a welcoming atmosphere. I realized that being a barista is not just about making coffee but also about connecting with people. This experience has inspired me to approach future challenges with the same enthusiasm and resilience, knowing that growth comes from stepping outside my comfort zone.
