PickleBall Tournament

Table tennis and badminton were my go-to sports, filling my weekends with friendly competition and endless fun. When I first discovered pickleball, I was immediately drawn to its unique mix of both games, combining the fast-paced action of table tennis with the strategic elements of badminton. The moment I picked up the paddle, I loved the game. And after that I continued to play pickleball. Recently, I heard about a pickleball tournament being organized by the students of grade 12 and was interested right away. The tournament was a duo knock out tournament. Therefore, I decided to partner up with my fellow batchmate Dharm.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

To successfully win the pickleball tournament, me and Dharm decided to play together for a week so that we our able to coordinate together better in the tournament and get to know our strengths and weakness. During our week of practice, I discovered that my strength was my serve. I had a very powerful and precise serve that would consistently put pressure on our opponents right from the start of each point. This would not only gave us an early advantage but also set the tone for the rest of the rally. I also found that varying the speed and angle of my serves kept my opponents guessing, forcing them to adapt quickly and often leading to unforced errors, although I am still not full able to master this technique as some times this result into wrong serve. In addition to my serving skills, I excelled at quick reflexes during fast exchanges due to my good reaction time developed due to playing table tennis. This agility allowed us to maintain control in rallies, enabling us to dictate the pace of the game.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

It became clear that one of the main challenges we faced was a lack of coordination between my partner and me. In our practices, we often found ourselves stepping on each other’s toes. This lack of coordination led to missed shots and confusion during critical moments in matches. To address this, we dedicated time to practicing our positioning and communication on the court, developing signals to ensure we were on the same page. This focus on teamwork not only improved our coordination but also strengthened our overall game strategy. Another area where I faced challenges was my poor smashes. Despite my strong serve and quick reflexes, I often struggled to execute powerful and accurate smashes when it counted. Recognizing this weakness motivated me to work on my technique. I spent additional practice sessions refining my footwork and timing, focusing on how to leverage my body for maximum power. There were noticeable improvement in my serves but it still wasn’t major improvement due to which I lost alot of points in trying to smash during the tournament.

LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience

For my CAS experience, I decided to participate in a pickleball tournament, which required careful planning and initiative. I recognized that competing would not only be a great way to challenge myself but also an opportunity to further develop my skills. With a busy schedule filled with schoolwork and extracurricular activities, I knew I had to be strategic about our practice sessions. I created a weekly plan that included dedicated time slots where we both practiced while also allowing for time flexibility for both. This was very difficult as we both have our classes at different times due to which we even missed one- two training session. So after alot of planning and communication we agreed to meet four times a week (MON, WED, FRI, SAT), where we could focus on specific skills like serving and coordination. We had missed our session on Friday due to which we had to keep a 2 hour long practice session on Saturday as we had tournament on Sunday.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

Throughout my CAS experience in preparing for the pickleball tournament, I demonstrated perseverance and commitment in several key ways. Despite juggling a busy academic schedule and other extracurricular commitments, I made it a priority to attend every practice session we had planned. There were days when I felt overwhelmed or tired, but I reminded myself of the goals we had set and the excitement of competing even after missing a practice day. This motivated me to show up, even when it was challenging. As we practiced, we encountered setbacks, such as inconsistent communication and difficulties with specific skills like smashes. Instead of getting discouraged, I approached these challenges as opportunities for growth. We took the time to analyze our performance after each session, identifying areas that needed improvement and adjusting our drills accordingly. This process taught me the value of resilience and the importance of maintaining a positive mindset in the face of obstacles.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

During my CAS experience in the pickleball tournament, I truly demonstrated the skills and benefits of working collaboratively with my partner. From the outset, we recognized that our success depended on effective teamwork, so we made it a priority to build strong communication and trust. As by establishing clear roles and signals, we minimized confusion and ensured we were both on the same page. This not only enhanced our performance on the court but also allowed us to support each other more effectively during challenging moments and helped us win many games. Our collaboration extended beyond just communication, we learned to celebrate each other’s strengths. And became a strength for each other where the another pose weakness. For example, I relied on my partner’s smashes, while he relied on my serves. By recognizing and leveraging each other’s abilities. Ultimately, this collaborative experience not only enhanced our performance in the tournament but also fostered a deeper friendship, demonstrating the immense value of teamwork in achieving shared goals.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, my CAS experience participating in the pickleball tournament was a amazing journey that highlighted the importance of collaboration, perseverance, and personal growth. Through dedicated practice and open communication with my partner, we were able to overcome challenges and celebrate each other’s strengths, ultimately enhancing our performance on the court. This experience taught me valuable lessons about teamwork, adaptability, even when we got knocked out in the semifinal. But this only motivated us to win another upcoming pickleball tournament together.
