Cross Country is a long-distance running event held on natural terrain, requiring both endurance and stamina. While I have always valued physical fitness alongside academics, the challenging transition from MYP to DP made it difficult for me to prioritize my health. However, participating in Cross Country as part of my CAS experience provided the perfect opportunity to focus on my physical well-being. We had three Cross Country runs scheduled on August 21nd, August 22nd, and August 27th, covering distances of 3 km, 3 km, and 3 km, respectively. The first run was alongside 7th and 8th graders, the second with 9th and 10th graders, and the final run with fellow 11th and 12th graders.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Reflecting on my personal strengths, I have always been actively involved in physical activities, which has helped me develop a strong mindset for long-distance running. Throughout my runs, I never gave in to the urge to stop and walk, constantly reminding myself to keep going, even if it meant running at a slower pace. My goal was always to finish ahead of as many participants as possible. Engaging in regular physical activity also made me realize that I had better endurance than many of my peers in cross-country.
However, after taking a long break from training during the summer vacation, I noticed a decline in my endurance when school resumed. This became evident during my first race, as I found myself feeling exhausted after covering 3 km. Additionally, I had to adapt to running on natural terrain, which was an essential part of cross-country. The first race taught me that running on uneven surfaces and muddy roads posed a different kind of challenge, one that I needed to work on.
In my initial runs, I struggled with fatigue and had to walk for about 500 meters to 1 km, which significantly increased my overall time. However, by my final race, I had improved considerably—I ran continuously without stopping and managed to complete the race in a much shorter time than my previous attempts. This experience reinforced my determination and highlighted the progress I made through perseverance and practice.
LO2 – Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills:
Taking part in cross-country running was an entirely new experience for me. Although I am accustomed to physical activity, especially in cricket, running long-distance marathons under tough conditions tested my endurance in a completely different way. Competing in three consecutive 3 km marathons was particularly demanding, especially in the intense heat. However, with perseverance, I gradually adapted to the sport’s challenges and was proud to secure a top 5 finish in the inter-house 3 km marathon. This accomplishment gave me a great sense of achievement. Pushing myself beyond my limits not only enhanced my stamina but also introduced me to a new aspect of fitness that I can continue to develop, particularly for cricket.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
My marathon journey was never a solo endeavor. Running alongside others created a strong sense of camaraderie, where we exchanged words of encouragement, shared training strategies, and celebrated each other’s progress. The support system we built extended far beyond race day. Even though the marathon was an individual challenge, the presence of teamwork was undeniable. Training with friends made the process more motivating, as we lifted each other up through tough workouts and cheered one another on during the race. This experience reinforced how vital collaboration and encouragement are, even in personal pursuits. Having a supportive team not only made the journey more enjoyable but also gave me the strength to push through the toughest moments.

Participating in the cross-country marathon was a transformative experience that helped me grow in various aspects of the IB learner profile, particularly in developing balance. As a balanced individual, I had to carefully manage my training schedule alongside my academic commitments, ensuring that I maintained my fitness without neglecting my studies. Long-distance running challenges not only physical endurance but also mental stamina, requiring resilience to push through fatigue and setbacks. By developing strategies to stay motivated and focused, I strengthened my ability to approach challenges in life with a balanced mindset. This experience taught me the importance of time management, discipline, and perseverance—skills that extend beyond sports and academics, shaping me into a well-rounded individual.
