Internship – Creativity

I was always interested in finance and stock market, I have been learning about all those stuff since grade 9. I even have a club in school just for this. As part of my CAS for basket 3 I decided to do internship just to learn more and showcase the things I have already learnt. I had this internship for 1 month started from 3rd of July to 3rd August.

As an intern in an investment firm “TurtleWealth”, the main goal was to do research of mid cap companies in the Indian stock market. From the start I would have to read multiple newspapers daily at the same time brainstorm on different sectors and macroeconomic trends and how should we plan our investment based on that. I wrote 1 research paper on a midcap stock in pharma industry with the name “Glenmark Life sciences” and at the same time researched multiple of them. Not only that but made a proper research paper in general to invest in those shares in the Indian stock market. The work sounds easy but involves a lot of reading, personally I am fond of reading and have read a lot of books but reading so much really gives headache. I would reach home from school at 4.30 pm after which start my internship at 5pm all the way to 8pm. I had no time to study so it was really hard for me to cope in class, at the same time I didn’t go to tuitions which created a lot of load for studies too. I didn’t have weekends because I had community service at the same time so it was exhausting for me to continue without even a small break. The internship taught me a lot about responsibility and learning. From PYP to MYP out teachers had always told us what to do, guided us and all the students really got dependent on them but DP is more towards taking your own responsibility and path because we won’t be guided always. My internship taught me the same thing, My supervisor would assigned me a task and it was up to me on how to finish it, she taught me about valuation and how to calculate it of a company. One more thing I learnt in the internship especially when it comes to investment that we should take care of every single detail and train our mind in such a way so that we don’t miss a small mistake either, we have to be patient, self aware to properly succeed.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth Screen reader support enabled.

One of my other favorite subjects has been math since primary school and investing is an integration of Math, logic and strategic mind and hence I identified that my strength is logic. I was able to find companies such to be invested by identifying the companies it gave me more and more confidence towards investing and gave me a logic and a clear understanding as to which methods to use, and what are the research platforms to use and how to find that is the company and the highest predictable point. However, one area of growth that I identified was remembering the formulas and that stregic tip to find the companies background and I used various research platforms too. So, I decided to research more and more and utilize my time effectively, simultaneously using sites like MoneyControl and many more. At the last I also started real trading in the Indian stock market by using my parents account.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.

I developed my thinking skills and self management skills by taking on this internship. The main thing was about prioritizing tasks and allocating my time more effectively because I had to do equity research of many midcap companies of various sectors like pharma, chemicals, metals, technology and automobile and then write a paper. This requires a lot of critical thinking stills because filtering companies sometimes requires a lot of judgement. The internship taught me about judgement and precision.

LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience.

Planning for a major part of the CAS expereience as I had to decide a way in which my time should be allocated, I had to decided which companies to research, what to research in a company, I had to decide what things should be completed before meeting with my supervisor. This was all possible because of better planning and structuring during the CAS experience.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience.

Allocating time was sometimes hard because I had different SA like economics, BM, Maths and Hindi. I had to decide which work I should give my time to. Sometimes I even got scolded by my supervisor because my works weren’t as detailed and I lacked clearity still I showed commitment and took responsiblity of my tasks and worked on improvement.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.

During my internship I got to interact with some people who had jobs in investment, plus I even used some works done by my supervisor on industrial analysis in order to deepen my understanding during the research. I collabrated with people and learnt from them about management analysis and talked to them about different industries which helped me work collaboratively. I realized that nowadays in school people sometimes just dont care about the work and let their teammates do all the stuff, But instead we should learn to care and to learn from each other. People all around me were experienced and it was more important for me to learn from them than to not care about the work being done by them.

LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

Choices and actions always have consequences attached with them. If I chose to do internship then my studies were sacrificed and vice versa. I had to consider all different ways, I had to consider what is right and wrong for me in which I could invest my time in order to get the best outcome out of my choices.
