Rural Immersion Trip to Padamdungri

The Rural Immersion Trip to Padamdungri was an opportunity to explore the beauty and simplicity of rural life. We had the chance to meet the Dangi people, visit local schools, and connect with students from government schools. From performing tasks to interacting with people, each activity has some element of learning. The trip was not just about exploring a different culture; it taught me valuable lessons about humility, compassion, and the importance of human connection. It allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and fully enjoy the customs, food, art, and music of the different cultures just like we did with the Dangi community. This experience left a lasting impression on me, changing how I see life and reminding me of the beauty in simplicity.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

One of my strengths during this trip was my ability to communicate well with the Dangi people. Speaking the same language, Gujarati, helped me connect easily with them, creating a space where they felt comfortable sharing their thoughts. This adaptability and willingness to learn from their experiences enriched my understanding of their culture. However, I realized I need to work on adjusting to different situations. Sometimes, I found it hard to change my approach when things didn’t go as planned. Learning to be more flexible would help me in future interactions.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrating That Challenges Have Been Undertaken and Developing New Skills

The time we spent at the turmeric farm was full of challenges, since I was trying farming for the first time and it required considerable physical effort. However, this experience made me realise how easily we take things for granted. We often forget how much effort goes into growing food, from preparing the soil to harvesting crops. This firsthand experience gave me a new appreciation for farmers and their dedication. We learned skills like resilience and teamwork. Despite the challenges, we learnt about the benefits of working together as a class and being grateful.

Learning Outcome 4: Show Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience

Every day was filled with activities like wall painting, bamboo crafting, rappelling, and learning local music. Some tasks, like cow dung lipan and cleaning walls, felt uncomfortable at first, but they became a lot of fun when performed as a group. The experience of such activities was even more memorable than other activities we did willingly. These activities taught us the importance of teamwork, patience, and stepping out of our comfort zones to try something new. Each activity, no matter how uncomfortable at first, taught us valuable lessons and skills, reminding us that discomfort can lead to great experiences.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively

Working together was important throughout our trip, especially when preparing for our skit. With only one night to get ready, we divided roles, shared ideas, and practiced our lines. This task was complete with laughter, disagreements, and mistakes, making it feel more like a fun gathering. Through this experience, I showed leadership and adaptability, learning how to balance different ideas and encourage my friends. The friendships we built during this teamwork not only improved our performance but also created bonds with classmates.

Learning Outcome 6: Engagement with Issues of Global Significance

The trip highlighted important issues like educational inequality and lack of resources in rural areas. Our time with local students showed me the differences in educational opportunities, making me think about how I can help bridge this gap. By connecting with the community and understanding their struggles, I see the need to advocate for equal access to education and resources. Our time at the government school made me realize the importance of basic education and the absence of it in rural communities.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions

Living with the Dangi people helped us reflect on our privileges. Sharing dinner with a local family was a powerful experience, as I saw the simplicity of their lives. The men helped with cooking and cleaning, challenging traditional gender roles and showing me the importance of shared responsibilities. This experience made me feel more grateful, reminding me to appreciate the simple things in my life. The kindness of the Dangi community inspired me to embrace simplicity and kindness in my choices.

The Rural Immersion Trip to Padamdungri was more than just trying local food; it was a deep experience of art, music, activities, environments, lifestyles, and languages. We learned about local markets, engaged in traditional crafts, and discovered the strong connections that tie communities together. This journey taught me about Dangi culture and enriched my understanding of life. The trip ended with more than just memories; I learnt lessons that will help me in the future—lessons of empathy, gratitude, and the importance of education and human connection.
