Teaching has always been our childhood memory but as I grew up I knew that it is not what we used to play. It involves lot of planning and communication skills. It is tough profession or work as from making the syllabus till teaching them all topics is not everyone’s cup of tea. I am fortunate that I have got this opportunity to teach government school students and try to give them the exposure and learning that we are getting at a higher fees. 3 friends who started this and are continuing with more and more people. group of 3 to 4 people are going at different assigned schools on Saturdays.
Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.
While teaching Grade 2 students, I realized patience and creativity were my strengths, as I could adjust explanations until they understood. My weaknesses were the language barrier (Gujarati) and sometimes feeling lazy to attend on Saturdays. Knowing these helped me reflect my strengths and gave me confidence, while weaknesses showed areas to improve. If I had overcome my laziness better, I could have been more consistent. This experience made me more aware of how important self-reflection is for growth.
Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
For every Saturday we planned lessons, discussed methods of how we can teach them, and though about class management. I am usually an organized person, so this experience was not that difficult to complete. Planning was easier than teaching because teaching in Gujarati required extra effort. I also discovered my adaptability when facing challenges. Now, I feel more confident that planning future activities will be easier, as I understand how preparation makes any experience smoother and more effective.
Learning Outcome 4: Show Commitment to an perseverance in CAS experiences.
This activity required commitment because it was on Saturdays, and sometimes I felt lazy after a busy school week. Still, I pushed myself to go regularly, which made me feel responsible and consistent. It wasn’t always easy to commit, but perseverance helped me grow. I realized that showing commitment is important because it makes the experience meaningful not just for me, but also for the students who depended on us.
Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
As 2 people together used to take a class. Here Working with others was important for planning lessons and managing the class. I usually find teamwork comfortable, and here it was helpful because we could share ideas and support each other. Sometimes opinions differed, but we learned to compromise and stay focused on the students. Collaboration made teaching smoother and showed me the value of teamwork and leadership in service.
Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
An ethical aspect of this activity was the responsibility of teaching honestly and respectfully, since the children trusted us. It affected me directly because I had to think carefully about my words and methods in class. I felt that doing the work sincerely was essential, not just for CAS but for the students’ learning. My opinion on ethics stayed the same, but this experience reminded me that even small actions, like showing up or preparing properly, carry an ethical responsibility.
Through this service, I developed the learner attributes of being knowledgeable, principled, and a thinker. I became more knowledgeable by learning how to explain math in simple ways and adapting to the students’ language. I was principled because I stayed committed to teaching with honesty and responsibility, even when it was challenging to attend every Saturday. Finally, I grew as a thinker by finding creative solutions to overcome the language barrier and keep the students engaged.
