Service is an integral component of our lives, whether on a local, national, or worldwide basis. As a child, I admired my grandfather for giving back to the community, especially to the less fortunate and needy. CAS provided me with the chance to deliver service through a learning engagement. At the heart of our school community, a transformative project has emerged where students teach their peers from government and village schools the basics of computer operations and IT skills. This initiative not only reflects the core principles of Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) but also serves as a platform for students to take on challenges, develop new skills, work collaboratively, and make a positive impact on the wider community.
LO 1: Identify Strength and Weakness
During the community service event, I had the opportunity to teach children the basics of operating a computer. This activity helped me reflect on my strengths and weaknesses. Having used a Chromebook for over six years as an IB student and having participated in several IT events, I was confident in my ability to teach a subject I am deeply familiar with. However, I also discovered that my introverted nature and stage fright posed challenges, making it difficult to address a group or interact with new people. Teaching the children helped me confront this fear. Their enthusiasm reminded me of my own excitement when I first started learning about computers, which motivated me to push past my hesitations. To further improve, I plan to participate in activities that require public speaking and leadership, aiming to overcome my shyness and speak confidently in front of an audience.
LO 2: Demonstrating Challenges Undertaken and Developing New Skills
Teaching IT skills to students from government and village schools presented several challenges, including adapting to their varying levels of familiarity with technology. Communicating concepts like using a keyboard, managing files, and browsing the internet required patience, creativity, and clarity. Through this experience, I developed my ability to simplify complex ideas and honed my communication and teaching skills. Overcoming these obstacles taught me resilience and the importance of persistence, helping me grow as both a mentor and a learner.
LO 3: Demonstrate How to Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience
My peers and I planned the community service project by designing IT-related activities that would be both educational and engaging. With guidance from IT experts, we developed a structured approach, beginning with basic computer operations such as turning on the device, understanding its parts, and performing simple tasks. Initially, we encountered challenges as some children struggled to follow our instructions. Realizing this, we adjusted our teaching methods by slowing down the pace and simplifying the explanations. This adaptation not only made the sessions more effective but also taught me the importance of flexibility in planning. Through this experience, I gained confidence in my ability to take initiative and learned how to address challenges proactively.
LO 4: Show Commitment to and Perseverance in CAS Experiences
Commitment has always been a challenge for me, as I tend to struggle with sustaining new initiatives. However, during this project, I remained dedicated. This meant giving up weekend mornings, arriving with a positive attitude, and maintaining a cheerful demeanor to ensure a supportive learning environment for the children. By staying consistent and persevering, I was able to provide meaningful guidance and help the students develop foundational IT skills. This experience strengthened my sense of responsibility and showed me the value of commitment in achieving meaningful outcomes.
LO 5: Demonstrating Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively
Collaboration was essential in making this project a success. My peers and I worked together to design lesson plans, divide responsibilities, and ensure each student received individual attention. This teamwork fostered a supportive and inclusive environment where ideas flowed freely, and everyone’s strengths were utilized. The collaborative spirit not only made the sessions effective but also deepened the bond among us. By working together, we created an atmosphere of mutual respect and empathy, reinforcing the importance of teamwork in achieving shared goals.
LO 6: Demonstrating Engagement with Issues of Global Significance
This project deepened my understanding of the global issue of unequal access to technology and education. Conversations with the children revealed how the lack of resources and opportunities impacted their learning and future prospects. Witnessing the disparities firsthand made me more aware of the privilege I enjoy and inspired me to contribute toward bridging this digital divide. Although this initiative was local, it highlighted a global issue—ensuring equitable access to technology and education for all. This realization has instilled in me a sense of global responsibility and the desire to continue addressing these challenges in meaningful ways.
LO 7: Identifying and Evaluating the Ethical Implications of Decisions and Practices
In teaching IT to children from government and village schools, we approached our task with sensitivity and respect, fully aware of the ethical considerations involved. Understanding our privilege and access to resources, we ensured that our sessions fostered inclusivity and equality. Language barriers were a significant challenge, as many children spoke different dialects. This required us to adapt our teaching methods, use visual aids, and employ a patient and empathetic approach to ensure everyone felt valued and included. This experience taught us that true mentorship is about connection and empowerment, not just instruction. By focusing on inclusivity and respect, we created a positive and impactful learning environment, reinforcing the ethical responsibility that comes with service.
This project exemplifies the transformative power of community service, skill-sharing, and collaboration. By teaching IT to children and empowering them with valuable knowledge, we not only contributed to their development but also grew as empathetic leaders. Through perseverance, teamwork, and ethical engagement, we demonstrated the essence of CAS and the potential for collective action to create meaningful change.
