I was part of the organizing committee for the Fountainhead School Model United Nations. This included my participation in creating the official website, flashmob, and at the event. The event focuses on catering to global issues and ethical choices, and I was highly involved in the initiation and planning of the event, facilitating a platform for hundreds of young minds to speak out on global issues and debate.
LO5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
As a part of the organizing committee, it was my job to collaborate with my teammates and make the whole event a smoot hand enjoyable experience for all participants. This included working with my team on creating the official website, having regular meetups to practice the dance for the flashmob, and excellent communication on the day of the event in order to divide roles and react to problems as they arose quickly. By working collaboratively, the event was much smoother and there was a strong sense of connection between all the team members which allowed for a strong team effort without any miscommunications.
LO3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience
I was highly involved in the initiation and planning of the event, from the get-go. Even before others began the planning of decoration and event coordination, my team and I were on top of things by making sure that the website was up and running so that all of the users could easily access the registration forms as well as get to know what the event was about. I was also part of the promotion of the event, showing up in the social media posts as well as in the flashmob which promoted registering. By initiating and planning this entire experience, I was able to gain a lot of understanding on event planning and what goes into that.
LO6: Engagement with issues of global significance
The event of FSMUN engages with issues of global significance, giving a voice to the youth of today’s generation. As they engage with issues on the basis of economics, politics, conflicts, and more, they have meaningful discussion. This prepares the younger generation for their futures and makes them much more internationally minded. As we all know, education is a huge problem of global significance, and along with that comes the lack of awareness and eloquence when concerning certain subjects. Not only do students learn about current events, but they also gain the ability to communicate diplomatically, coming up with innovative and modern solutions to the problems presented by their committee. As a member of the organizing committee of this event, I was directly involved in the committee sessions and was able to witness their meaningful debate spring forth. By planning this event with my team, we were able to address this huge issue and push forward ideals of peace and communication.
LO7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
Choices and actions have large impacts on multiple stakeholders, but this is especially true in the workings of Model United Nations. By playing the roles of delegates for certain countries, students were forced to fully consider the ethical impacts of their choices and how that might affect not only their country, but others as well. I, as a member of the organizing committee, was also part of this, as my job during committee sessions was to check through notes sent by countries to see if they were worthy of being passed on. Thus, while reading, I too had to consider the ethics of the student’s choices. Some notes were vulgar or unhelpful to push forward discussion, and I had a strong part in deciding whether or not the note should be passed based on the ethical implications of the notes. Furthermore, by planning this entire event, our team pushes forward discussion on the ethics of choices and actions as a whole, being the main focus of any Model United Nations.
