For my CAS project, I chose to organize a marathon-style event that combined physical activity, innovation, and collaboration. The aim was not only to encourage participants to challenge themselves physically but also to provide a platform where people from diverse backgrounds could come together, share ideas, and form meaningful connections. This project appealed to me because it aligned with my personal interests in fitness, leadership, and creativity, while offering an opportunity to contribute to the well-being and development of others. The experience required thorough planning and preparation, from coordinating logistics and ensuring safety measures to encouraging participation and fostering an inclusive environment. By hosting the event, I was able to explore my own strengths, such as communication, organization, and problem-solving, while also identifying areas for growth, including adaptability and time management. Moreover, this project was not just about running a marathon—it was a way to engage with the community, promote collaboration, and create opportunities for innovation. Participants were able to exchange ideas, work together, and support each other, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and social inclusion. This CAS experience also aligned with several global sustainability goals. By promoting physical health, learning through collaboration, reducing social inequalities, and building partnerships, it connected personal development with broader global issues. Overall, organizing this marathon allowed me to reflect on the significance of perseverance, ethical responsibility, and the impact that thoughtful actions can have on both individuals and the wider community, making it a meaningful and transformative experience.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Organizing and hosting the marathon provided a unique opportunity to explore my personal strengths and areas for growth. I realized that my ability to plan effectively, communicate clearly, and take initiative are definite strengths that allowed the event to run smoothly. Coordinating participants, volunteers, and logistics required careful attention to detail and consistent organization, which played to these strengths. At the same time, I became aware of areas where I needed improvement, particularly adaptability and time management. Unexpected challenges, such as last-minute schedule adjustments or participant concerns, tested my flexibility and problem-solving skills. Reflecting on these moments made me realize the importance of staying calm under pressure and being able to adjust plans quickly without compromising the quality of the event. I also noticed that while I am confident in leadership roles, encouraging participation and actively including quieter individuals was an area for growth. Overall, this experience not only allowed me to apply my strengths but also encouraged me to develop resilience, self-awareness, and a proactive approach to challenges. It highlighted the importance of continual personal growth and reflection, showing me that understanding both strengths and limitations is essential to being an effective leader and collaborator in any initiative.
LO2 – Undertake challenges and develop new skills
Hosting a marathon presented multiple challenges that required me to step out of my comfort zone and develop new skills. One major challenge was coordinating a large group of participants, each with varying levels of experience and fitness, while ensuring the event was both inclusive and engaging. This required developing practical skills in event management, including scheduling, communication, and safety planning. Another challenge was fostering meaningful interactions among participants from different backgrounds, which pushed me to improve my facilitation, interpersonal, and networking abilities. Managing unforeseen issues, such as last-minute cancellations, equipment adjustments, or motivational barriers for participants, taught me problem-solving under pressure. I also learned how to anticipate potential risks and plan contingencies, which enhanced my strategic thinking. Beyond practical skills, this experience developed resilience, perseverance, and adaptability as I navigated challenges with patience and determination. It reinforced that challenges are opportunities for growth rather than obstacles. By overcoming these difficulties, I gained confidence in my ability to handle complex situations, manage diverse groups, and achieve objectives, all while learning skills that extend beyond the scope of this event. This LO helped me understand that personal growth is often achieved by embracing challenges and taking proactive steps to learn from them.

LO3 -Show how to start and design a CAS experience.
The marathon needed to be planned and initiated through proper organization, long term thinking, and leadership. The initial step was the conceptualization of the event, which aimed at its definition by specifying the purpose of the event as the platform of physical activity and sharing of ideas among the participants with varied backgrounds. The most important logistics that I needed to map out were routes, registering the participants, safety, and time keeping, so that all the events of the event were organized and possible.
These plans were put into action by initiating the project. I organized the volunteers, informed the people about the schedules, and arranged the marathon setting, ensuring that everyone felt welcome and involved. The planning stage was not that simple as the coordination of several aspects had to be considered at the same time as the fair participation as well as the plans in case of the weather change or last-minute changes. Nevertheless, the process of initiation was easier due to proper planning, so the event proceeded efficiently and effectively.
This experience taught me to be forward-thinking, organized, and flexible. Planning was able to give me anticipation of the possible roadblocks, whereas initiating needed confidence, problem-solving and decision-making on the spot. On the whole, this LO also allowed me to build my project management experience, initiative, and translating ideas to real actions, which speaks to the significance of preparation and active leadership in any CAS experience.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Collaboration was a central aspect of my marathon CAS project, and it highlighted the importance of teamwork in achieving meaningful outcomes. Successfully hosting the event required working closely with volunteers, participants, and peers to coordinate logistics, facilitate activities, and create an inclusive atmosphere. Through collaboration, I learned the value of active listening, patience, and open-mindedness, ensuring that everyone’s ideas and concerns were acknowledged and integrated into the planning process. There were moments of differing opinions, such as decisions about race routes, schedules, or participant groupings, which required compromise and negotiation. Navigating these situations helped me develop conflict resolution skills and reinforced the importance of clear communication in collaborative efforts. Additionally, I observed how collective input often led to more creative and effective solutions than working alone, emphasizing the benefits of teamwork. Beyond the practical outcomes, collaborating with diverse individuals helped me appreciate different perspectives and cultural backgrounds, enhancing empathy and social awareness. This experience demonstrated that collaboration not only strengthens project outcomes but also promotes personal growth, resilience, and leadership skills, as working well with others requires adaptability, mutual respect, and the ability to balance individual contributions with the group’s objectives.

LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Ethical considerations played a key role in hosting the marathon and ensuring a positive experience for all participants. I had to ensure that the event was inclusive, fair, and safe, considering the needs of individuals from diverse backgrounds, fitness levels, and abilities. Decisions such as assigning participant groups, maintaining equal access to resources, and enforcing safety measures required ethical reasoning and responsible judgment. I also reflected on the broader impact of my actions, including promoting teamwork, respect, and social inclusion, which emphasized the importance of acting with integrity and accountability. The responsibility of creating a supportive environment encouraged me to consider how my choices affected others and reinforced the value of principled leadership. Additionally, encouraging participants to collaborate and share ideas ethically fostered a sense of trust and community, highlighting how ethical actions influence social dynamics and outcomes. This experience taught me that ethical awareness is not limited to rules or policies but extends to everyday decisions that affect people’s experiences and well-being. Recognizing the ethical dimensions of planning and leading the event strengthened my sense of responsibility, empathy, and commitment to acting in ways that positively impact individuals and the wider community.
