One of the most meaningful CAS experiences I have undertaken is organizing the Cervical Cancer Vaccine Camp. Under the guidance of Dr. Kirti Sharma and with the help of my father, volunteers were able to make this camp a reality in order to help raise awareness about cervical cancer and to make the vaccine accessible to underprivileged women and girls. The camp vaccinated more than 360 participants for free to the girls from government schools and at a subsidized rate for women. We arranged not only the vaccination process but also breakfast, a comfortable environment, and a follow-up camp for the second dose.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
This project helped me discover my strengths in leadership, communication, and event coordination: I realized I could efficiently manage everything from logistics to outreach. However, I also found areas of growth-especially in delegating tasks and staying composed under pressure when issues such as power failure happened. The awareness helped me to improve problem-solving and time management.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.
Everything from medical coordination and budgeting to community outreach had its challenges. The main difficulty was to get rural families to accept and cooperate with vaccinations. To overcome this, one had to develop effective communication skills and learn about cultural barriers. Also, I learned how to coordinate between medical teams, volunteers, and participants while maintaining safety and organization.
LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience.
It is a camp that required months of planning: finalizing Agrasen Bhavan as the venue, securing vaccines, coordinating NGOs and doctors, and mobilizing funds. I initiated meetings, created awareness materials, and delegated tasks across our team. Planning such a large-scale event helped me develop organizational and leadership skills, along with the ability to adapt when timelines or logistics changed.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience.
I was fully dedicated to the project, from the first planning meeting down to the final vaccination day. I had to work against resource limitations and time pressure, attending every coordination meeting without ever missing any detail. My determination was most evident during the execution phase, when at some point unexpected problems came up, yet I never stopped solving them until the event went smoothly.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
This project required collaboration. I was working with doctors, nurses, volunteers, and school staff to make this camp a success. Communication and teamwork were crucial, especially in handling registrations, vaccination flow, and refreshments. This experience taught me that effective social change occurs when people with diverse skills commit themselves towards one goal.
LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance
Cervical cancer is a pressing global health issue, particularly in developing nations where awareness and access to vaccines remain limited. By organizing this camp, I directly contributed to UN SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being and UN SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities. The initiative helped bridge the gap between healthcare availability and affordability, showcasing how local action can address global challenges.
LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Ethical considerations meant fairness, safety, and respect within the camp. It also reflects social responsibility by offering free or subsidized vaccines, while maintaining medical confidentiality and participant comfort shows ethical awareness. I also learned to use my privilege responsibly to serve others: making decisions transparently with empathy, understanding exactly how people felt.
Reflection
This Cervical Cancer Vaccine Camp was a strong reminder of how meaningful service can make all the difference. I grew as a communicator, leader, and empathetic individual, learning that small initiatives create large community impacts. This experience strengthened my belief in the importance of preventive healthcare and further inspired me to continue advocating for health awareness and equality.
