For our school’s Independence Day celebration, I participated in a dance performance alongside four other students. We decided to choreograph and perform a fusion dance that incorporated both classical and contemporary styles to reflect India’s cultural diversity and evolving identity. The performance took place during the morning assembly in front of students, teachers, and parents.
Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Through this experience, I realized that one of my strengths lies in picking up choreography quickly and expressing emotions through dance. However, I also recognized that I need to work on maintaining synchronization in group performances, as small timing differences can affect the overall presentation. This activity helped me become more aware of how individual contributions impact a group performance.
Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate how to plan and initiate a CAS experience
Our group was responsible for conceptualizing the dance from scratch. We chose the songs, choreographed the routine, divided sections, and organized after-school rehearsals. I took initiative by arranging the practice schedule and ensuring everyone was available. We also coordinated with the music and stage team for sound checks and stage placements. This process enhanced my planning and organizational skills.
Learning Outcome 4: Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences
Preparing for the performance required consistent effort over two weeks. There were moments when not everyone could attend practice, which made it challenging to stay on track. However, we committed to extra weekend rehearsals to ensure the performance was polished. Balancing academic work with these practices required perseverance and time management, both of which I developed further through this experience.
Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
This performance relied heavily on teamwork. We had to synchronize movements, support each other through difficult steps, and give constructive feedback. I learned to communicate more effectively and compromise on choreography ideas when necessary. Working collaboratively not only made the performance stronger but also created a supportive environment where everyone felt valued.
Participating in this Independence Day dance allowed me to engage actively in a meaningful cultural celebration while developing essential personal and collaborative skills. It strengthened my ability to plan, persist through challenges, and work effectively in a team. Overall, it was a rewarding experience that combined creativity, cultural expression, and personal growth.
