For my CAS project, I decided to organize and participate in a Volleyball Club at school. The main goal of this project was to encourage more students to get involved in sports, learn teamwork, and improve their physical fitness while having fun. The club was open to students from different grades, and we held weekly practice sessions where we focused on learning the basic techniques, improving our game strategies, and organizing friendly matches.
I planned this project with a few classmates who shared my interest in volleyball. Together, we divided the responsibilities — managing attendance, setting up the court, preparing drills, and ensuring fair play during matches. Over several weeks, we noticed an increase in participation and enthusiasm from the students, which made the experience very rewarding.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
At the start, I realized that although I was fairly confident in playing volleyball, I still needed to work on my serving consistency and strategic gameplay. By teaching and playing regularly with others, I developed these skills over time. I also discovered strengths I didn’t know I had, like encouraging others and maintaining team spirit when players felt frustrated or tired.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
The biggest challenge I faced was managing a group of students with different skill levels and keeping everyone equally involved. Some players were beginners who needed more guidance, while others were more experienced. Balancing the sessions so that everyone could learn was tough at first. Over time, I learned organizational skills, time management, and adaptability, which helped make the sessions smoother and more enjoyable for everyone.
LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
This project required a lot of planning — from getting permission to use the volleyball court, scheduling sessions after school, arranging equipment, and designing training drills. I worked with my classmates to make a plan for each week. We also collected feedback from the players to improve the sessions. Taking initiative in this project taught me how to plan effectively and coordinate with others to bring an idea to life.
LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Maintaining the club consistently was not always easy. There were days when it rained or when many players couldn’t make it, but I stayed committed and kept the sessions going whenever possible. Even after tiring school days, showing up and keeping the club active made me feel proud and motivated. It also reminded me how perseverance helps build both discipline and passion.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
The volleyball club was based entirely on teamwork. Both during matches and in organizing the sessions, collaboration was key. I learned how effective communication and cooperation can make a group activity successful. Every member brought something different to the club, and by working together, we managed to create a friendly and supportive environment that made everyone want to return each week.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Physical health, teamwork, and sports participation are global issues connected to well-being and community building. Through this club, we promoted the idea of staying active, reducing screen time, and maintaining mental health through sports. It made me realize how local actions like this can contribute to a larger global goal of promoting healthy lifestyles and social inclusion.
LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
As a club member, I also learned the importance of fair play and respect. Ensuring everyone had a chance to play, treating opponents respectfully, and maintaining honesty during games were small but important ethical lessons. We made sure to use school resources responsibly, kept the court clean, and returned all equipment after every session.
Reflection
Starting and maintaining the Volleyball Club was one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling CAS projects I’ve done. It helped me improve my physical and social skills, gave me confidence, and taught me how to plan and lead group activities responsibly. Most importantly, it reminded me how sports can bring people together and create a strong sense of community.
I hope the club continues even after this project and inspires more students to stay active and passionate about volleyball.
