Over the past three weekends, I had the incredible opportunity to work with students from NGO and government schools. Along with five of my peers, we organized six lively dance sessions, where we taught simple steps through a youtube video, steps of a song , played garba, and enjoyed music with the children. This experience pushed me to develop new skills, plan spontaneously, persevere, and collaborate effectively.
LO2 – Undertaking Challenges and Developing New Skills
The biggest challenge was keeping energy and enthusiasm high throughout the sessions. Most students were in 5th grade or younger, so making the dance enjoyable while teaching simple steps required creativity and patience. I had never conducted such interactive sessions before. To overcome this, I engaged with students individually, encouraged them, and joined in their fun. This taught me that I can motivate and energize a group a skill I hadn’t realized I possessed before. I can see this skill being useful in future leadership roles or any activity involving group participation. Completing this challenge made me feel proud and confident in my ability to adapt and energize others.
LO3 – Planning and Initiating the Experience
Even though the sessions were largely spontaneous, initiating and planning them required thought. We divided students into dance groups, set up the DJ, and ensured everyone could participate. Normally, I am somewhat organized, but this activity pushed me to prepare for varying skill levels and unexpected situations. I now feel more confident planning and initiating similar activities, as I learned how to structure tasks and manage groups efficiently.
LO4 – Commitment and Perseverance
These sessions required commitment and perseverance, especially over three weekends. Maintaining focus and energy while teaching the same steps repeatedly was challenging, but my dedication to creating a fun environment kept me motivated. Persevering allowed the children to enjoy themselves fully and learn effectively, which was highly rewarding.
LO5 – Collaboration and Teamwork
Working with my five peers was essential. Coordinating who would teach which group, managing music, and ensuring engagement required constant communication. Collaboration was key because we needed to maintain energy and keep groups organized. Even when minor disagreements arose, we supported one another and focused on our shared goal. This highlighted the importance of teamwork and leadership, showing that working collaboratively can make challenges easier and more enjoyable.
Conclusion
This experience strengthened several IB Learner Profile attributes. I became principled, ensuring all children were included; open-minded, adapting to different skill levels; and caring and balanced, valuing both the children’s needs and my peers’. Finally, I became more reflective, evaluating what strategies worked best. Overall, this activity allowed me to grow as a learner, collaborator, and leader.
