Community Cleaning Drive

During CAS, I volunteered in an Community cleaning drive aimed at gathering and breaking down dry leaves to create fertilisers. Not only did this activity aid in kindling the sanity of my school but I also got the opportunity to know how little actions can make a good difference to the environmental place. The task appeared easy, and it turned into a chance to challenge, to be determined, and to tie my efforts to set the global problems.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

One of the challenges I faced during this activity was finding an effective method to collect and handle the dry leaves efficiently. Initially, it was difficult to gather them without scattering or creating dust, but through teamwork and trial-and-error, I learned better techniques of collecting and packing them into compostable piles. Additionally, I developed skills in understanding the decomposition process—how dry organic waste can be turned into nutrient-rich compost instead of being burnt or wasted. This practical experience improved my problem-solving abilities and gave me knowledge about sustainable waste management.

LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

Cleaning up and managing the decomposing process required consistent effort and time. It was not a one-time task; we had to regularly check the piles, ensure proper conditions for decomposition, and stay committed until the process was completed. At times, the work was tiring and repetitive, but I reminded myself of the larger purpose behind it. By staying dedicated, I demonstrated perseverance and responsibility towards both the task and the community’s environment.

LO6: Engagement with issues of global significance – This experience connected strongly to global issues like climate change, waste management, and sustainability. By composting the dry leaves, we avoided burning them, which reduced air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, while also creating natural compost that enriched the soil and supported biodiversity. This directly aligns with SDG 11,12,13, and SDG 15, showing how even a small local action like managing dry leaves responsibly can contribute to addressing challenges of global importance.

Overall, this community cleaning drive was a meaningful CAS experience that helped me learn, stay committed, and act responsibly. It showed me how small actions can create a ripple effect in promoting sustainability. Most importantly, it made me more aware of my role in contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment
