The Fresher’s Party was a collaborative initiative by our Grade 12 class to celebrate and welcome the juniors as they step into the IB Diploma Programme. As the project in-charge, I was responsible for ensuring that the event was well-planned, enjoyable, and meaningful. This experience gave me the opportunity to not only take up leadership responsibilities but also to reflect on the importance of collaboration, open-mindedness, and ethical decision-making.
One of the first steps involved was initiating and planning a CAS experience (LO3). We brainstormed ideas as a group and worked through multiple possibilities before finalizing the event structure. My role required me to listen to everyone’s opinions and incorporate them into a cohesive plan. Being open-minded was essential because I had to ensure that every team member’s perspective was respected, while also balancing practical limitations like time, budget, and resources.
The project demanded a high level of commitment, as there were moments of stress and setbacks. From coordinating music and decorations to arranging performances and refreshments, everything required time and effort. I showed perseverance and commitment (LO4) by staying dedicated to the process, even when challenges arose. For example, there were disagreements within the group about the theme and performances, but I learned to handle these calmly and guide the team toward consensus.
At the same time, I developed new skills through this process. Leading such a large project was not easy, but it helped me improve my organizational skills, decision-making, and adaptability. This allowed me to demonstrate that challenges had been undertaken and new skills were developed (LO2).
Most importantly, the fresher’s party was not an individual effort—it was the result of teamwork. Every person contributed in their own way, whether it was arranging logistics, planning entertainment, or helping with the decorations. By recognizing and valuing everyone’s contribution, I was able to demonstrate the skills and benefits of working collaboratively (LO5).
An important part of this experience was also being ethically aware. We wanted the event to be inclusive, enjoyable, and respectful of everyone present. As the in-charge, I made sure that our decisions reflected fairness and responsibility, which allowed me to recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions (LO7).
Finally, this event connected with engagement with issues of global significance (LO6) because it reminded us of the importance of inclusivity, celebration of diversity, and community-building. The Diploma Programme is an academically challenging journey, and creating a welcoming environment for the juniors helped foster a sense of belonging and support, which is a universal value across cultures and societies.
Overall, the Fresher’s Party was a successful CAS project that strengthened my leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities while allowing me to grow personally and ethically. It was a truly rewarding experience that celebrated not only our juniors but also the spirit of teamwork and responsibility.
