This year, I had the opportunity to participate in FS Got Talent as part of the event décor team. What may seem like just arranging decorations was, in reality, an enriching and hands-on learning experience that pushed me to be creative, collaborative, and responsible all at once.
My role involved designing, planning, and setting up decorations for three different venues; each with its own theme. This wasn’t just about hanging up banners or adding color; it was about transforming spaces into environments that reflected the spirit of the event, engaged the audience, and gave performers a stage they could be proud of. Working on multiple venues meant brainstorming ideas, adapting designs to different settings, and ensuring that every detail contributed to a lively and welcoming atmosphere.
Being someone who loves arts, design, and creative problem-solving, this experience gave me the perfect platform to apply my interests in a real-world context. It wasn’t just about personal expression but also about teamwork. Each member of the décor team brought different ideas, and together we shaped them into a shared vision. At times, it meant letting go of my own preferences and appreciating others’ perspectives, something that made the final outcome richer and more dynamic.
The process wasn’t without its challenges. With time pressure, limited resources, and the responsibility of meeting expectations, I had to think quickly and adapt my plans. There were moments when things didn’t go as intended, but those moments taught me the importance of resilience and problem-solving under pressure.
Through this, I recognized my strengths in creativity and design, while also developing new skills in organization, project management, and teamwork. Balancing the preparation with my academics further pushed me to improve my time management, making sure neither was compromised.
The IB Learner Profile attributes I developed were
Communicator: I enhanced my ability to share ideas clearly with team members and coordinate effectively to achieve a common goal.
Open-minded: I learned to appreciate other’s creative ideas and integrate diverse perspectives into the decor.
Balanced: I managed my time between academic responsibilities and preparing for the event decor, developing personal organisation skills.
Risk-taker: I experimented with new design concepts and materials to create a unique and engaging event space.
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was that we consciously used sustainable, reusable, and recycled materials, ensuring that the decor didn’t just look beautiful but also minimized waste. This added a deeper sense of responsibility, reminding me that creativity and sustainability can, and should, go hand in hand.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken
Decorating for an event like FS Got Talent requires working under time pressure, managing limited materials, and ensuring the outcome meets audience expectations. These challenges pushed me to think quickly, adapt my plans, and develop resilience.
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
I was actively involved in brainstorming ideas, preparing designs, and collaborating with the team to plan the decor. This planning stage helped me learn how to structure tasks, manage priorities, and take initiative in a group setting.
LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experiences
Event decor requires consistent effort and long hours leading up to the performance. By staying committed to the work until the event is successfully completed, I demonstrated dedication and perseverance even when faced with challenges.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
I worked closely with a group of peers, where teamwork and clear communication were essential. By coordinating and combining ideas, I recognized the benefits of collaboration in achieving creative results that would not be possible individually.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
In deciding how decorations were to be created, what materials to use, and what resources to reuse, I reflected on the ethical implications of my choices, particularly regarding waste generation, budget use, and environmental impact.
At the end of FS Got Talent, seeing the decorated venues come alive with energy and appreciation from the audience and performers was deeply rewarding. It wasn’t just about making the event look good, it was about creating an atmosphere of excitement and togetherness.
This CAS experience reminded me that creativity is most powerful when it’s shared, sustainable, and purposeful. It gave me skills and reflections that go far beyond decoration; lessons I’ll carry with me into future projects, both inside and outside the classroom.
