One Day Trek (Activity)

When I was introduced to the chance to be a part of a trek on a monsoon morning, I was definitely not hesitant to participate. Though it wasn’t a common occurrence for me to be a part of these things, I was enthusiastic to gain a new experience and push myself to complete the entire trek. Little did I know what was supposed to be a sunny, scorching morning trek, turned into a damp mess with heavy rains the entire time. I had to conquer several challenges which made the experience a whole lot better.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.

There were several strengths I identified, such as perseverance and resilience. Once we realized that this trek is going to be filled with monsoon rains and the slippery slopes will have to be dealt with without a doubt, I decided to push through and ensure that I didn’t give up but rather put on my best performance. This resulted in me being at the start of the line with my friends, being one of the first people to reach the waterfall. Another strength of mine was preparedness, I was ready with the right shoes, clothes, and other resources such as sleeves and a water bottle in a small bag which I carried with me to make the trek a smoother journey.

I realized I needed better balance and caution after encountering a fall, since the walking area is narrow and the rain didn’t make it any easier to navigate through it. I also had to improve self awareness, to ensure where I needed to take a pause, drink water, and observe my surroundings to keep myself safe. These were skills that got better as I traversed through the trek.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

There were challenges that came up, such as physical endurance. It was especially difficult going down with the muddy rocks and puddles in the way, and it was essential to ensure that the task was done without any injuries. Moreover, coming back uphill was a much worse task due to the steep incline and the water seeping deep into the soil making it difficult to correctly place steps on stable ground. However through determination it was easy to overcome these challenges and complete the trek.

There were also problem solving skills developed in the process since we had to come up with ways to go through areas that weren’t steppable. We made use of nearby rocks and ropes to cruise through such areas. We also developed communication skills, since I was at the start of the line and I could signal others behind me of upcoming areas that were unsafe or difficult to pass through.

LO 4: Show commitment to, and perseverance in, CAS experiences.

During the trek, I was challenged to stay committed even when the conditions became increasingly difficult. The rain had made the path slippery and unpredictable, and at times it felt exhausting to continue, especially on the steep uphill climb where every step required extra effort. Despite the discomfort and the urge to stop, I pushed myself to keep going, reminding myself that completing the trek was part of the experience I had chosen to take on.

This persistence allowed me to finish the trek successfully, and it showed me the value of staying committed to a goal even when the process is uncomfortable or tiring. I realized that perseverance is often more mental than physical, as maintaining a positive mindset helped me overcome fatigue. Supporting and encouraging others along the way also motivated me to stay strong, and in the end, completing the trek gave me a sense of accomplishment that made the challenges worthwhile.
